Kane County Cougars News Release

Lansing, MI- Kane County Cougars third baseman Myron Leslie crushed a home run for the second time in as many days, but it became the Cougars' only run of the game Saturday night in a 5-1 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts at Oldsmobile Park, ending the Cougars' winning streak at five.

Cougars starter Tony Evans had a 1.49 ERA entering the game, compared to Lugnuts starter Danny Core's 7.91 mark, but Evans struggled and Core flourished. After Kane County's right-hander had wiggled out of jams in the first two frames, Lansing took the lead in the third from a three-run homer by Charlie Anderson. Leslie answered with a solo shot to lead off the fourth to cut it to 3-1, but the Cougars never got closer. Evans departed after 4 2/3 innings, giving up the three tallies on five hits, walking a season-high five and striking out four.

Jared Trout entered and finished the fifth, worked a perfect sixth and walked a man in the seventh before giving way to Derek Tharpe. The left-hander, in his first appearance off the disabled list, walked one Lugnut before surrendering a two-run single to Anderson for a 5-1 score. Marcus McBeth tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Evans (5-1) took the loss after his shortest outing in six starts, and Core (4-4) grabbed the win for Lansing. Game three of the series is Sunday afternoon at 6:05 CDT. Trent Peterson (0-0, 1.50) makes his second start for the Cougars (10-7) against southpaw A.J. Wideman (5-4, 4.63) for Lansing (9-8).
