Quebec's 6-Run Third Sinks Worcester 10-4

June 18, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

The Tornadoes took a 2-0 lead after their first five batters, but the Capitales answered with a 6-run third inning en route to a 10-4 victory against Worcester on Friday night at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. Seth Henry's grandslam gave Quebec its first lead (5-2), and the Capitales tacked on five more runs over the course of the third and fourth innings.

Robert Wagner was 3-for-4 with two hits in the 12-batter third, including a lead-off single (and run scored) plus an RBI hit of his own. He tripled in two runs in the 4th, giving the Capitales their largest lead of the game. All but one batter reached base for Quebec in the game, while Zach Zuercher (3-2) had his roughest outing of the season.

Zuercher got a 1-2-3 first inning and faced the minimum three batters in the second, but never recovered from three straight hits to open the inning. He walked Goefrey Tomlinson, when Henry nailed his four-base four-RBI hit over the left field fence. Zuercher went 3.2 innings, striking out two while walking three and allowing eight runs (all earned) on eight hits and a hit batter.

Dan Sausville (2-0) picked up the victory, pitching two innings after an hour-plus rain delay (1:13:00). He ended the game with five innings pitched, two strikeouts, one walk, two hits and two runs allowed (both earned). After the first three Tornadoes batters reached in the first, he retired 12 in a row (albeit the first two batters, Mark Minicozzi and Nick Salotti each had sacrifice flies).

Mark Minicozzi was ejected in the bottom of the fourth inning after arguing balls and strikes. He was the first Tornadoes player (or coach) to get thrown out of a game this year. Tony Patane came in to replace him and went 0-for-2.

Former Tornadoes pitcher (2009) Anthony Sullivan pitched a perfect eighth inning against his old club, culminating in a swinging strikeout of Salotti.

Sean Keeler made his Worcester debut in relief of Zuercher. Keeler allowed two walks, four hits, and two runs (both earned) in his 4.1 inning outing, striking out two and hitting a batter as well. His night ended with back-to-back strikeouts of Pete LaForest and Rene Leveret to end the eighth.

Anthony Sosnoskie hit his first homerun of the season in the ninth inning, capping a 2-for-3 day at the plate. He walked, scored two runs and had a double off of the Capitales' pitching staff.

Chris Colabello extended his hitting streak to nine games, which matches his season-high. Abraham Nunez has reached in 15 consecutive games, including a 1-4 effort on Friday with a run scored.

Quebec and Worcester will square off in game two of the series on Saturday evening. The first pitch is at 7:05pm, and Tornadoes Pre-Game Live begins at 6:50. The gates will open a half-hour earlier than usual so fans can have additional time during the Worcester Cares Fundraiser at the ballpark.

For $15, fans can participate in the many different events going on before, during and after Saturday's game. There will be face painting, clowns, balloons, an appearance from the Worcester Sharks' mascot FINZ, a jersey auction, a raffle, and many opportunities for fans to make additional donations. Since June 7, the Tornadoes have put aside each ticket sold, and will donate all proceeds for the night to the American Red Cross. Tickets will be available at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field starting at 10am Saturday.
