PITTSFIELD, MA - The Pittsfield Colonials got excellent pitching throughout 14 innings of baseball and broke out the bats in a major way as the Colonials swept a doubleheader from the New York Federals, winning 5-0 and 11-4.
Scoreless into the third inning, the Colonials got on the board in the bottom half of the frame on a Matt Nandin RBI single, bringing home Rafael Cabreja and Jerod Edmondson for a 2-0 Pittsfield advantage.
The Colonials would extend the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Peter Fatse. In the fifth, singles by Danny Bomback and Angel Molina scored Cabreja and Bomback to create the final 5-0 margin.
Mike Zenko (1-0) got the win with three scoreless innings of relief. Making his professional debut, Eric Katzman pitched well for Pittsfield, going four scoreless innings, striking out six.
In game two, the Colonials jumped out early as Billy Mottram drove in a pair with a first inning single. Pittsfield would add two more in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to open up a 9-0 lead.
Scott Kanzek rounded out the scoring for Pittsfield with a two-run homerun in the sixth. It was the culmination of a big night for Knazek who had three hits and drive in five runs in game two.
New York created the final margin on a Wilson Matos grand slam in the seventh.
The win went to Yosandy Ibanez (1-1) who tossed two innings of scoreless relief. T. J. Wink started and went four scoreless innings, allowing two hits.
