Can-Am League Final Game Recaps
June 18, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
Pittsfield 5, New York 0 (Game 1 - 7 innings)
Eric Katzman made his first appearance for the Colonials on Friday, starting on the mound and throwing four shutout innings in Pittsfield's rain-interrupted 5-0 win against New York. Katzman - who struck out six Federals batters - left the game after the fourth, making the way for relief man Mike Zenko to pick up his first win of the season. Zenko threw the fifth, sixth and seventh frames and allowed just two hits and struck out two. The Colonials scored twice in the third inning on a Matt Nandin single - the second run coming via Federals error - and never looked back. Nandin finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Pittsfield 11, New York 4 (Game 2 - 7 innings)
A Wilson Matos grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning couldn't spark the 11 runs the Federals needed to come back against Pittsfield, and the Federals fell to the Colonials in Game 2, 11-4. Pittsfield C Scott Knazec led all players with five RBI, going 3-for-4 and also scoring two runs. Pittsfield starting pitcher T.J. Wink performed well but didn't factor in the decision, leaving after four innings of two-hit ball.
New Jersey 7, Rockland 3 (Final - 7.2 innings)
A dense fog led to an early final Friday, with the Jackals taking a 7-3 win. Jackals 3B Nick Giarraputo scored three runs on a 3-for-4 night. He also hit a solo home run on the second pitch of the fourth inning. Jackals starting pitcher Ryan Kulik earned the win after throwing five and allowing three runs while striking out two Rockland batters. The Boulders went on top 3-0 on a three-run home run from Vic Buttler in the bottom of the first. But Kulik and the New Jersey pitching staff shut out Rockland from that point on.
Quebec 10, Worcester 4
The Capitales scored all their runs in the third and fourth innings, with Seth Henry's third-inning grand slam the crowning moment of the contest. Henry finished the game 2-for-4 with the slam accounting for all his RBI (4) and runs (1). Quebec starting pitcher Dan Sausville earned the win after throwing five innings and allowing just two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Tornadoes C Anthony Sosnoskie went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI to lead the way for Worcester.
Brockton 17, Newark 14
Once leading Newark, 12-4, the Rox had to hold on to defeat Newark by just three runs, 17-4. Brockton DH Melvin Falu hit his fifth home run of the season - a two-run shot in the ninth that proved to be vital - to highlight a 3-for-5 night. On top of three RBI, Falu also scored three runs. The Bears' Paddy Matera hit a solo home run to score one of his three runs on a 3-for-4 night. The Rox also got key contributions from Jorge Jimenez and Chris Valencia, who knocked in four and two runs, respectively. Rox reliever Dustin Birosak, who entered the game to start the fourth inning, earned his second win of the season with a three-inning performance in which he allowed one run on two hits.
