Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
San Jose, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped their fifth straight game to the San Jose Giants, falling on Saturday by a final of 7-2 at Excite Ballpark.
Rancho has only endured a five-game losing streak on one other occasion, when they were on the wrong side of the final five games against Modesto back at LoanMart Field, in their first home stand of the 2021 season. A loss on Sunday in the finale, would mark the first time Rancho has been swept all year.
Quakes' starter Gavin Stone got touched for four runs (three earned) on two hits over 3.2 innings, but Stone also walked three batters.
The Giants took the lead with an unearned run in the second, then grabbed a decisive advantage by scoring three in the fourth and chasing Stone (0-1) before the end of the inning.
Edwin Mateo's RBI groundout put Rancho on the board in the fifth, but the Giants immediately answered with two in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-1 lead.
San Jose added another in the sixth, before Rancho rounded out the scoring in the seventh, when Imanol Vargas scored on groundball off the bat of Eddys Leonard.
The Quakes offense managed seven hits in the game, but they rarely threatened against San Jose starting pitcher Carson Ragsdale (2-2), who allowed one run on three hits with nine strikeouts over five strong innings. Leonard was the only batter with a two-hit night for Rancho.
Despite the loss, the Quakes got help from Modesto, who defeated Lake Elsinore (23-24) on Saturday to keep the Storm a half-game out in the South Division.
Needing a win on Sunday to avoid the sweep, the Quakes (23-23) will send Robbie Peto (0-2) to the mound against Ryan Murphy (1-1) in a rematch of game-one starters from Tuesday night. Game time for Sunday's finale will be 5:00pm from Excite Ballpark.
On Tuesday, July 6th, the Quakes return to LoanMart Field for another Temblores Tuesday. Tickets are available at rcquakes.com.
