Today's Preview: The Grasshoppers (A, Marlins) look to avoid a 3-game skid and a series loss to the BlueClaws (A, Phillies) as they play Game 3 of this 4-game series. Greensboro has dropped seven of its last 10 games since July 14. The Hoppers, which had been as close as a half-game out of first place on July 5, have struggled in the weeks since, falling to now 6.0 games back of the first place BlueClaws in the South Atlantic League Northern Division Second Half standings.

Hoppers Hurler: Colton Hock, 22, makes his fifth start and 25th appearance of the season as he faces Lakewood for the fifth time. The former Stanford standout has dazzled in relief against the BlueClaws, going 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/10.1 IP) and 11 strikeouts compared to one walk in four relief appearances. Lakewood is batting .143 (5-35) against him. Hock, the SAL leader with nine wins, is 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA (8 ER/15.1 IP) in four starts compared to 8-3 with a 2.33 ERA (12 ER/46.1 IP) and 48 strikeouts in 20 relief outings. After serving as a spot-starter during the first half, Hock is making his third straight start since July 14. He is coming off a no decision at Delmarva on July 20, allowing two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. The Marlins selected Hock in the fourth round of the June 2017 First-Year Player Draft after he worked as a reliever at Stanford for three seasons.

About Last Night: The Grasshoppers gave up five runs in the second inning as the BlueClaws pulled out a 6-2 win on Tuesday. Lakewood sent 10 players to bat in the big inning, scoring five runs on seven hits off Greensboro starter Sean Guenther. Julian Garcia (4-2) earned the win with 5.0 scoreless innings, working around three hits and a walk while striking out eight. Guenther took the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on 10 hits over 4.0 frames in his second start with Greensboro this season. Brandon Miller, who recently moved from the Grasshoppers rotation into the bullpen, tossed 4.0 scoreless innings in relief. The right-hander struck out two and walked none while working around one hit to finisht the game on the mound for Greensboro (48-52). In the bottom of the second, Matt Vierling, Daniel Brito, and Quincy Nieporte strung together three straight 1-out singles, and Colby Fitch followed with a 2-run triple for a 3-0 lead. Dalton Guthrie, Simon Muzziotti, and Jake Scheiner then added a parade of three straight 2-out hits to built the BlueClaws lead to 5-0. Down 6-0, the Hoppers put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the sixth off reliever Tyler Fallwell. Tristan Pompey singled to cash Thomas Jones, and Will Allen added an RBI-out, scoring Jose Devers, but Greensboro could not close the gap beyond that.

Ruins of Pompey: New Hoppers outfielder Tristan Pompey is batting .279 (17-61) with two doubles, a home run, six RBI, six runs scored, and three stolen bases during his 16 games since joining Greensboro on July 7. He has hit safely in 11 of his games while reaching base safely in 13 of his 16 games with the Grasshoppers. The Marlins selected Pompey in the third round of the June 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of Kentucky, making him the first member of the 2018 draft class to reach Class A Greensboro.

One Run Wonders: After playing its fifth straight game decided by one run in Monday's 7-6 loss at Lakewood, Greensboro is 20-16 in 1-run games this season, tied for the most 1-run wins in the South Atlantic League this season. Greensboro's 20 victories equals both 20-15 Lakewood and 20-16 Kannapolis while 19-24 Charleston also has nearly a score of 1-run victories.

Walked Off: The Grasshoppers endured a stretch of three walk-off defeats in four games from July 20-23 after having not suffered a walk-off defeat since April. On July 20 at Delmarva, the Shorebirds edged the Grasshoppers 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning. Two days later, in Game 1 of a July 22 doubleheader, Delmarva rallied for a 4-3 win in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Grasshoppers are now 4-5 in walk-off games in 2018.
