Swift Current Broncos News Release
PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Swift Current Broncos (2-6-1-2) have come close to picking up two points on a pair of occasions during this B.C. Division road swing, but faltered in overtime in Kelowna and a shootout in Vancouver. They have one more chance to get into the win column on the trip as they finish it off Tuesday against the Prince George Cougars (3-6-0-1).
Saturday the Broncos played one of, if not their best games of the season against the Vancouver Giants, but dropped a 4-3 decision in a nine-round shootout.
Ben King gave the Broncos the lead through 20 minutes, capitalizing on a turnover by goaltender Trent Miner. The Giants struck twice in the second period but Kasper Puutio's first goal in the Western Hockey League with 12 seconds left in the period had it knotted up 2-2 after 40.
After the Giants took a 3-2 lead early in the third, Broncos captain Ethan Regnier tied it just minutes later, setting the stage for overtime. Swift Current began overtime with 1:12 of power play, but couldn't end the game.
In the shootout, the first two shooters, Lukas Svejkovsky and Regnier, scored before the next two were stopped. After Cole Shepard scored for Vancouver, Connor Horning tied it to send it to extra shooters. The next 10 shooters were stopped, including Puutio, Matthew Culling, King, Brecon Wood and Carter Chorney for the Broncos, before Sergei Alkhimov scored for Vancouver.
Hayden Ostir was then turned aside by Miner as the Broncos lost their seventh game in a row.
The Cougars, like the Broncos, have had trouble generating offence so far this season as the two teams are tied with 21 goals each. At the other end of rink, goaltending has clearly not been an issue for Prince George as they enter Tuesday's game with just 28 goals against, tied for seventh in the WHL.
Prince George is coming off a weekend split with the Spokane Chiefs, winning 4-1 on Friday before a 5-2 setback on Saturday.
