Eastlake, OH (May 22, 2009) - The West Virginia Power erased a 3-0 deficit on Friday night at Classic Park, using a four run sixth inning and a clutch RBI double in the ninth inning from Calvin Anderson to take the first game of the series, defeating the Lake County Captains 6-5.
Michael Valadez hit his first of two run scoring singles in the bottom of the second. He struck again for the Captains in the bottom of the fourth and Mark Thompson's fielder's choice allowed Jeremie Tice to score later in the inning, giving the Captains their largest lead of the night. West Virginia began their comeback in the fifth inning on Robbie Grossman's RBI single.
The Power took the lead in sixth inning, scoring four times on three hits. Adenson Chourio ripped a bases loaded single to score the first run before Josue Peley grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to plate the tying run. Grossman came through again on his third hit of the night with a two-out single to score the final two runs of the inning.
Karexon Sanchez tied the game an inning and a half later on a two-run homer, his seventh of the year. In the ninth, Greg Picart walked, and Grossman moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt before Calvin Anderson doubled down the left field line to score Picart.
Ryan Kelly (1-1) allowed a pair of runs on three hits over two innings and earned the victory, while Eddie Pena (6) worked a perfect ninth inning to secure the save. Eddie Burns (0-1) allowed a run on two hits over three innings and was tagged with the loss.
West Virginia improved to 15-26 after the victory, and the Captains fell to 18-22 with the loss. Grossman led the way for the Power with a 3-for-4 performance, and knocked in three of their five runs. Anderson ripped a pair of doubles and went 2-for-5 on the night. His 30 RBI are tied for the most in the league. Picart's four game hitting streak came to an end, but he still reached three times in five trips to the plate.
West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Lake County Captains at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio on Saturday night. Right hander Maurice Bankston (1-4, 5.61) will start for the Power and the Captains will counter with right hander Trey Haley (0-1, 10.38). The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
