CHARLESTON, SC - Leadoff hitter Dan Brown drove home three runs and right fielder Marques Williams went 4-for-4 as the Lexington Legends toppled the Charleston RiverDogs, 8-2, in South Atlantic League action Friday in front of 5,319 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With the triumph, the Legends jump to 20-21 on the season while the RiverDogs fall to 22-19.
The Legends collected 13 knocks on the night as Brandon Barnes also had three hits.
Lexington seized an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the second when Federico Hernandez reached on an infield single and then advanced to third after Brandon Barnes' double down the left field line. With the runners in scoring position, Marques Williams singled to left center to plate Hernandez and Barnes for the game's initial runs.
Brian Pelegrini gave the Legends a 3-0 lead in the fourth when he cracked a solo blast over the right-center field wall for his second home run of the season. It came on a 2-2 pitch off Charleston starter Manny Banuelos (1-2).
The RiverDogs slashed into the Legends' lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth when David Adams drew a leadoff walk and then sprinted around the bases after Dan Brewer's double into the left field corner. Melky Mesa followed with a double on the very next pitch to drive in Brewer for the inning's second run.
The Legends captured a 6-2 advantage in the seventh frame when Barnes doubled to left and then scampered to third on Williams' infield single. Jorge De Leon reached on a fielding error that scored Barnes and moved Williams to third. Brown then laced a two-run double to left-center field that plated De Leon and Williams
Two runs and four hits helped Lexington extend their advantage to 8-2 in the top of the ninth.
Legends closer Patrick Urckfitz shut down the RiverDogs for the final four outs and secured the save, his second of the season.
Banuelos allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out three in 5.2 innings pitched. Dan Kapala and Brad Rulon combined for the final 3.1 frames and allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Leading Charleston's nine-hit attack were Corban Joseph and Dan Brewer, who each collected a pair.
Charleston sends right-hander Brett Marshall (1-3, 5.35 ERA) to the mound in the series finale Saturday night while Lexington opposes with righty Kyle Greenwalt (2-3, 2.50) as first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
