Power Whipped in Series Finale

The West Virginia Power dropped the series finale to the Lakewood BlueClaws 17-3 on Tuesday night at Appalachian Power Park. The BlueClaws plated ten earned runs over four innings against Power starter Phillip Irwin, including a six run second that featured three home runs.

Lakewood sent nine men to the plate in the second inning and built a 6-0 lead on six hits including home runs by Anthony Hewitt, Alan Schoenberger, and Leandro Castro. West Virginia countered with two in the bottom of the inning on a double by Jesus Brito and a ground out by Elevys Gonzalez.

In the fourth, the BlueClaws scored four runs to create a 10-2 advantage and added two more in the sixth inning. In the home half of the sixth, Jairo Marquez hit his first South Atlantic League home run to cut the score down to 12-3. The BlueClaws would score five more times over the game's final two innings to cap the scoring at 17-3, marking a new single-game high in runs allowed by Power pitching this season.

Irwin (5-2) took the loss, while Jonathan Pettibone (5-5) gained the win. David Rubinstein had three hits to pace the Power, and two others added two hits each.

West Virginia completed its longest homestand of the season with six wins and three losses, including a sweep of Delmarva. The Power have a 27-30 record at home this season with 12 games remaining.

West Virginia had Wednesday off and will travel to Lexington on Thursday to open a five game series at 7:05 pm. The Power return to Charleston on August 17 to host the Asheville Tourists at Appalachian Power Park.
