MONDAY: West Virginia lost 10-6 to Lakewood in 12 innings. The Power held leads of 2-0 and 4-3 during regulation play, but the BlueClaws managed to tie each time. Lakewood took a 6-4 lead in the tenth on a home run by Stephen Batts. In the bottom of the inning, Jarek Cunningham reached on an error and score on Jose Hernandez's 11th home run of the year to tie the score. In the 12th, the BlueClaws scored four on four hits and two Marc Baca wild pitches. With the loss by West Virginia, this series is tied at two wins each. Lakewood clinched the season series with Monday's victory.
DOUBLE THE FUN: For the second time this season, Power hitters collected five doubles in a single game. Ramon Cabrera, Jarek Cunningham, Aaron baker, Jose Hernandez, and Rogelio Noris all reached on two-base hits Monday night, matching the output in a 10-9 ten inning win against Lexington on July 8.
JOSE AT HOME HERE: Jose Hernandez leads the Power with a .307 home average thanks to a four hits night Monday. The outfielder has appeared in 42 games at Appalachian Power Park this season and has 46 hits in 150 at bats with seven of his 11 home runs and 22 of his 44 runs batted in here. Only Rogelio Noris has hit more home runs in Charleston this season (8) while only three different players have driven in more runs (although Noris, Aaron Baker, and Evan Chambers have also appeared in more games at home).
WALK OF LIFE: Evan Chambers walked twice Saturday to bring his league leading total to 86. Chambers is in third place across all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Conner Crumbliss of Kane County (95) and Kila Ki'aihue of Omaha (88). Allan Dykstra led all of Minor League baseball last year with 104 walks in 125 games played, while Robbie Grossman had 75 to lead all Power players.
JUST UNDER IN JULY: The Power finished July with a 14-15 record, roughly in the middle of the SAL pack for the month. Charleston and Lakewood held the league's best record at 18-12, while Hagerstown had the lowest winning percentage with a 10-18 mark. West Virginia hit .259 during the month, their best average in any month this season and their 23 home runs were second only to their June totals. The Power staff ERA was 4.67; slightly more than on run higher than May's season best 3.65 earned run average, but still slightly over a full run less than June's 5.65 ERA.
POWER POINTS: Ramon Cabrera leads all South Atlantic League catchers with a .992 fielding percentage. Of catchers who have caught at least 50 games this season, the Power backstop is tied for the fewest number of errors (5) and the fourth fewest passed balls (11)... For the first time since May 28, someone other than David Rubinstein leads the club in batting average. Jose Hernandez is now batting one point higher than Rubinstein to lead the team at a .287 clip... Monday's game was the longest of the season, lasting three hours and fifty minutes, surpassing the previous marathon from July 18 by nine minutes.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was idle and opens a six game road trip tonight in San Diego... Indianapolis lost 9-1 at home against Norfolk... Altoona did not play and opens a series with Trenton tonight. Rudy Owens is slated to start for the Curve... Bradenton fell 6-5 at Palm Beach. Nathan Baker made the start but did not factor in the decision... State College was shutout by Tri-City 7-0.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
