Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Tyler Massey's 14th inning triple to left-center scored Delta Cleary from second to give the Asheville Tourists a 2-1, extra-inning victory over the Augusta GreenJackets on Tuesday night. Asheville took three of five from the Jackets, who finish a somewhat disappointing nine-game homestand with a 4-5 record.
In the 14th, Cleary reached on a dropped third strike and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt to set up Massey's heroics. The triple was Massey's first and only hit of the contest.
The GreenJackets and Tourists battled through six and a half scoreless frames before Augusta broke the ice in the seventh. Ryan Cavan tripled to lead off the inning. With one out, Evan Crawford's suicide squeeze bunt up the first base line scored Cavan to give the Jackets a one-run lead. Asheville answered in the eighth as Jose Valdez and Jose Casilla walked the bases loaded to open the inning. Jared Clark's league-leading tenth sacrifice fly scored Massey from third to tie the game at one.
Both teams had chances in extras. The GreenJackets had two runners on in each the tenth and 12th innings while Asheville had at least one in scoring position in every extra inning but the 12th until the broke through in the 14th.
The starting pitchers - largely forgotten due to the length of the game - turned in fine outings. Brian Irving threw seven scoreless innings of five-hit baseball, walking one and striking out seven. Nick Schnaitmann allowed one run on six hits in 6.2 innings.
Chris Gloor (3-2) takes the loss for the Jackets, allowing the 14th inning run after dealing two scoreless innings prior to the 14th. Leuris Gomez (5-4) pitched a perfect 13th inning to get the win for Asheville while Sheng-An Kuo repeated that in the 14th for his 18th save of the year and second of the series.
The GreenJackets have Wednesday off and will open up a nine-game road trip - their longest of the season - on Thursday in Rome with the first of five games against the Braves. Chris Heston (3-11, 4.41) takes the mound for Augusta and will face Robinson Lopez (3-7, 4.38). First pitch from Rome will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
