Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
(Charleston, WV- April 11, 2015)- West Virginia fought back early but fell to the Savannah Sand Gnats 11-4 on Saturday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Jerrick Suiter continued his hot hitting by hitting an RBI single in the first and blasting a two-run shot as part of a three-RBI day.
Power starting pitcher Dovydas Neverauskas got off to a slow start by allowing three runs in the first inning but the offense chipped back in the home half of the frame. Trace Tam Sing drew a walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an error by the Savannah third baseman on a ball hit by Michael Suchy. Suchy then stole second and scored on Suiter's first RBI of the day.
Savannah responded by plating two more in the second and one in the third to take a 6-2 lead. In the home half of the third, Suchy drew a one-out walk and Suiter followed with a two-run home run to left to make it 6-4.
Miguel Rosario kept the Sand Gnats at bay by tossing 3.1 innings in relief but Savannah took advantage after the right hander left the game. In the sixth inning, the Sand Gnats sent 11 batters to the dish and scored five runs.
Neverauskas (0-1) took the loss after he surrendered five runs on four hits over 1.2 innings. The right hander walked four batters and struck out two in his 2015 debut. Casey Meisner (1-0) earned the victory for Savannah.
