Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds rode stellar pitching to a 3-1 victory on a beautiful Saturday night at Perdue Stadium. The trio of Brian Gonzalez, Garrett Cortright and Derrick Bleeker threw a combined one-hitter as Delmarva improved their record to 2-1.
The Shorebirds got off to a good start with an early two-out rally in the first inning. Alex Murphy hammered a double off the left field wall, just staying in the park. The next batter, Conor Bierfeldt, singled up the middle to put Delmarva on the board, 1-0. In the fifth inning, the Shorebirds extended their lead when Jay Gonzalez scored all the way from second base on a fielder's choice in the infield.
Brian Gonzalez continued the trend of phenomenal pitching from Shorebirds' starters. The left-hander retired the first nine batters he faced while making his full-season debut. Just 19 years old, Gonzalez eventually surrendered his first hit in the fifth inning. The Orioles' 3rd round pick from 2014 was pulled after two walks to start the sixth inning.
Protecting a 2-0 lead, Garrett Cortright allowed just one of the runners to score after a sacrifice bunt and a RBI grounder by Justin Twine. Cortright escaped with a 2-1 advanatge after a flyball off the bat of Brian Schales.
Delmarva got the insurance run right back in the bottom half of the sixth. Jomar Reyes laced a triple into the right-center alley, his third hit of the game. After a walk to Jamill Moquete, Jonah Heim delivered an RBI grounder to score Reyes and push the lead back to two runs, 3-1.
Cortright pitched a clean seventh inning, going two scoreless innings in relief without allowing a hit. Derrick Bleeker entered for the Shorebirds, and he did not disappoint. Bleeker struck out five of the six batters he faced, completing two perfect innings for his first save of the season. Gonzalez earned the win, his first as a pro since being drafted last June. Squier settled for the loss for Greensboro by giving up two runs on seven hits in his 4 1/3 innings of work.
The Shorebirds go for the series win in the finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Matthew Grimes will make his Shorebirds' debut against Marlins' top prospect Tyler Kolek, the second overall draft pick from 2014. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.
