Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - One night after a dominating performance and an Opening Night win, the Hickory Crawdads pitching staff was roughed up Friday night as they allowed 14 runs on 16 hits in the 'Dads 14-4 loss to the Hagerstown Suns at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Five Crawdads pitchers appeared in the game in which the Suns scored multiple runs in five different innings, plating two in the 2nd, three in the 4th & 5th, four in the 6th, and two more in the top of the 9th. The Hickory offense produced four runs on nine hits of their own, but the final two tallies came after Hagerstown had amassed a double-digit advantage.
The first third of the game was a close contest, with the Suns scoring a pair of unearned runs off of Crawdads starting pitcher Luis Ortiz in the 2nd to take a 2-0 lead. The 'Dads answered in the bottom of the frame when Luke Tendler lined a solo home run to right to cut the deficit to 2-1. Tendler came through again in the third, this time with an RBI single to plate Michael De Leon and tie the score at 2-2.
Hagerstown pulled away from there however, as the Suns touched up Hickory reliever Trey Lambert four six runs, five earned, on eight hits over the next 1.1 innings. Kevin Matthews followed out of the pen and recorded three strikeouts over his 1.1 IP, but the lefty also allowed four runs on four walks and a hit to give Hagerstown a 12-2 lead.
David Perez was able to calm the Suns bats with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief including 5 Ks, during which time the Crawdads scored a run in the 7th on an RBI single from De Leon to make the score 12-3. The Suns plated their final two runs of the night in the top of the 9th, when Hickory left fielder Eduard Pinto appeared to injure his left leg on a line drive hit by Hagerstown batter Raudy Reed. Pinto collapsed to the field, allowing Reed and to circle the bases for a 2-run, inside the park homer to make the score 14-3.
The 'Dads plated the final tally in the bottom of the frame on an RBI base knock from Ronald Guzman for the 14-4 score.
Suns reliever Ryan Ullman (1-0) earned the win after allowing one run on two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts over his four innings out of the pen. Lambert (0-1) took the loss for the 'Dads.
Tendler (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, R), Pinto (2-2, 2B, R, BB) and Jose Cardona (2-4) all finished with multi-hit games to lead the Hickory offense.
The Crawdads (1-1) and Suns (1-1) will match up again Saturday evening at 6:00 pm in game three of their four-game series.
