Charleston, WV (May 19, 2009) - The West Virginia Power left nine runners on base, including six in scoring position at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night and the spoiled opportunities cost them as they fell to the Lakewood BlueClaws by the final score of 4-2.
Lakewood took a 2-0 lead in the first inning for the second night in a row. Harold Garcia started the game with a double and scored on a two-bagger from Anthony Gose. Gose scored later in the inning on James Murphy's first of two singles on the night.
The Power answered quickly with a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the first. Chase D'Arnaud tripled in Robbie Grossman and scored later in the inning on Calvin Anderson's double. Lakewood took the lead for good a half inning later on Leandro Castro's run scoring single in the top of the second. The BlueClaws plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth, on a pinch hit, RBI single from Jeremy Hamilton with two outs.
Santo Hernandez (2-1) shut the Power down over four and a third scoreless innings of one hit ball in relief to snag the victory while B.J. Rosenberg (5) pitched a perfect ninth inning to score the save. Duke Welker (0-5) pitched well, but suffered a hard luck loss, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings, struck out six and issued no walks.
West Virginia fell to 13-25 after the loss, and the BlueClaws improved to 22-15 with the win. Marcus Davis, Calvin Anderson and Robbie Grossman both reached twice, but there were no multi-hit games for the Power. Anderson's RBI in the first inning gave him 29 on the year, the most in the South Atlantic League.
West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. Left hander Rudy Owens (4-1, 3.09) will start for the Power and the BlueClaws will counter with right hander Heitor Correa (0-1, 2.55). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
