Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, N.C. - DH Eric Fry hit a bases-loaded, two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Hickory Crawdads to a 3-2 win against the Delmarva Shorebirds before 1,617 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Hickory has won each of the first two games of the series against Delmarva, extending the Shorebirds eight-game losing streak.

Delmarva (17-18) struck first with a run in the top of the third inning against Hickory starter RHP Wilmer Font, when 1B Elvin Polanco picked up an RBI single to score LF Kyle Hudson from second. That was the lone run Font allowed through 4.2 innings of work, during which he struck out six batters and only gave up five hits and three walks in the no-decision.

The Crawdads (20-18) came right back with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the third off Delmarva starter RHP Oliver Drake. CF Jared Bolden started the rally with a one-out single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by SS Jake Kaase. With two outs and Bolden on second, 2B Mike Hollander grounded a pitch through the middle of the infield for a game-tying RBI single. 1B Erik Morrison then drove Hollander in with an RBI double to left-center, putting the Crawdads in the 2-1 lead.

Facing LHP Glenn Swanson on the mound in the top of the seventh, Delmarva squared the score at 2-2 on an RBI ground-out hit by Polanco. With the game still tied in the bottom of the eighth and two outs on the board, the Crawdads extended the inning with back-to-back singles from Morrison and RF Mike Bianucci. 3B Matt West then was hit by a pitch from RHP Colin Allen (0-3, 7.79) to load the bases with two out. Fry stepped up to the plate next and drove a pitch through the right side of the infield to bring in Morrison from third and put the Crawdads in the 3-2 lead. Bianucci tried to score on the play but was retired at the plate, however, Hickory had the lead heading to the top of the ninth.

RHP Matt Nevarez (1-1, 1.38), who struck out the side in the eighth inning, slammed the door on the Shorebirds with a second straight three-up, three-down inning in the ninth to secure the win. Allen was tagged with the loss for the Shorebirds.
