Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

CHARLESTON, WV - The BlueClaws bullpen, in support of starter Jason Knapp came up huge in a 4-2 victory against the West Virginia Power on Tuesday night. The win keeps the BlueClaws (22-15) 1.5 games atop the rest of the field in the South Atlantic League Northern division.

The game began just like any normal shootout with five runs between the BlueClaws and the Power (13- 25) in the first one and a half innings. However after that the game calmed down and became a pitchers duel.

The BlueClaws got on the board in the first with two runs. One came off back-to-back doubles to lead off the game by Harold Garcia and Anthony Gose and the other on a Jim Murphy RBI single.

However, the Power struck right back with two in the bottom of the inning as Robbie Grossman led the game off with a walk and he scored as Chase d'Arnaud, Travis d'Arnaud's brother, tripled to deep center field. He would then score on a double by Calvin Anderson to tie the game up at two in the bottom of the first.

The BlueClaws then regained the lead in the second as Sebastian Valled doubled to lead off the inning and then scored on a single by Leandro Castro to give the BlueClaws the 3-2 lead that they would hold that lead until the ninth inning.

In the ninth, the BlueClaws got an important insurance run as Travis Mattair reached and was singled home by Jeremy Hamilton who was pinch-hitting for Castro. The run gave the BlueClaws a 4-2 lead before BJ Rosenberg worked a 1-2-3 inning to slam the door shut in the ninth.

Knapp struggled to find the zone and only went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs while walking five batters and striking out five. He was relieved by Santo Hernandez (2-1) who continues to pitch a lot of innings at a time and bail out the BlueClaws. He went 4.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just two baserunners. With BJ Rosenberg closing out the game in the ninth, Hernandez got a well-deserved second win of the season. The save was the fifth for Rosenberg on the season, tying him with Ryan Bergh.

After a rough start, Power starting pitcher Duke Welker (0-5) ended up going six innings. He allowed eight hits and three runs, but settled down nicely after the second inning. The six-foot-seven righty then gave way to Brian Leach who worked a clean seventh and eight before running into trouble in the ninth.

The win puts the BlueClaws at 4-2 so far on this eight- game road trip and at seven games over .500 for the first time this season.

The BlueClaws look to clinch an over-.500 road trip on Wednesday at 7:05 in game three of their four game series with the Power. The BlueClaws will call on Heitor Correa (0-1) to do the deed, coming off an impressive seven-inning one-run performance. He will be opposed by lefty Rudy Owens (4-1).
