Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads topped the Delmarva Shorebirds, 4-3, in 14 innings before 701 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday night, starting off a four-game series. After LF Eric Fry hit a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, CF Jared Bolden drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourteenth inning to win the game.

After four scoreless frames dealt by both teams' starters, RHP Joe Wieland for the Crawdads and RHP Ryan O'Shea for the Shorebirds, Delmarva (17-17) got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. With two on and two out, and already logging two strikeouts in the frame, Wieland struck out 2B L.J. Hoes on a pitch in the dirt, for what would have been the final out in the frame, but the pitch got back to the backstop to extend the inning for RF Ron Welty. Welty then hit a two-run single to crack the scoreless tie and chase Wieland from the game in his 2009 debut. Wieland ended up with the no decision, logging five strikeouts and only two runs allowed on four hits through 4.2 innings of work.

The Crawdads (19-18) got on the board with a solo home run hit by 2B Erik Morrison in the bottom of the sixth inning, his fourth of the season in just 15 games played. After Delmarva tacked on an unearned run against RHP Fabio Castillo, Morrison struck again with an RBI triple to plate SS Jake Kaase in the bottom of the eighth to pull Hickory back within one, 3-2. The Crawdads completed the comeback when Fry belted a two-out solo home run over the right field wall with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, forcing extra frames.

Both bullpens dealt scoreless frames from the 10th through the 13th, before the Crawdads loaded the bases in the bottom of the 14th with two walks and a bunt single, leading to Bolden's game-winning walk, forcing in DH Mike Hollander from third base to win the game, 4-3. RHP Mark Hamburger dealt three scoreless innings in relief, as did LHP Yoon-Hee Nam (4-1, 0.81), who racked up five strikeouts and earned the win. RHP Brent Allar (0-1, 5.09) was tagged with the loss for Delmarva.
