CHARLOTTE, NC - The Binghamton Devils exploded for three power-play goals in the first period for a 4-1 win on Sunday afternoon inside Bojangles' Coliseum over the Charlotte Checkers.
Josiah Didier's night lasted just ten seconds as he was ejected for a hit on John Quenneville. Binghamton responded with a power-play goal as Yaroslav Dyblenko's shot from the right point beat goaltender Jeremy Smith for the lead just 3:30 into the game with assists from Tim Kennedy and Michael Kapla.
Just 2:27 later, Bracken Kearns deflected in his 14th of the year for a 2-0 lead after a shot from Jacob MacDonald. Kearns' power-play goal was assisted by MacDonald on the shot from the point and Christoph Bertschy on the setup pass.
Gregg McKegg split the lead in half for the Devils as the Checkers took advantage of their own power play. McKegg's ninth of the year came at 15:59 as he beat goaltender Eddie Lack on the blocker side from the right wing circle with assists from Valentin Zykov and Lucas Wallmark.
Binghamton added to the lead with another power-play goal to finish out the first period. Christoph Bertschy let a slap shot go from the right side that beat Smith for his 13th of the season with 3:00 left in the period. The lone assist was credited to MacDonald, his second point of the period and the Devils took the 3-1 lead into the intermission along with a 15-7 shot advantage.
After no scoring in the second or most of the third period, Blake Speers sent in an empty-net goal for the 4-1 lead with assists from Mario Lucia and Michael Latta at 17:02. The score held up as the final with Lack stopping 25 of 25 for the win and Smith picking up the loss, denying 30 of 34.
