Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sunday afternoon 4-1, pushing their magic number to make the playoffs to 14. The P-Bruins got goals from Connor Clifton, Austin Czarnik, Jordan Szwarz and Jakub Zboril while Zane McIntyre made his 39th start of the season in net.

Providence dominated the first period offensively and it showed on the scoreboard with a 20-10 shots advantage and the first three goals of the game. Their first goal came just 40 seconds into play and came on the first professional shift for Boston Bruins first round pick Trent Frederic. He started the play in the middle of the attacking zone, getting the puck to Tommy Cross at the half boards. Cross found Clifton at the right point and he fired a slapshot towards Sound Tigers goalie Kristers Gudlevskis. With Frederic and Anton Blidh screening in front, the puck got through for Clifton's fourth goal of the season and the P-Bruins took a 1-0 lead.

The offensive attack continued on the power play at 8:18 with Providence's leading scorer finding the back of the net. Czarnik had space inside the right circle and used a drag move to create his chance. He fired a shot top-right corner for his 21st goal of the season and 11th power play goal on the year. Kenny Agostino and Paul Postma picked up assists on the play and Providence grabbed a 2-0 lead. Czarnik was on the helping end of the P-Bruins third goal at 11:52, corralling a bouncing puck and settling it down for Szwarz. Szwarz sent a wrister in shortside for his 19th goal of the year as Providence entered the first intermission up 3-0.

John Stevens scored 16 seconds into the second period to cut the P-Bruins lead to 3-1, but Providence regained their three-goal edge at the end of the second. With 4:05 left in the period, Josh Hennessy sent a centering feed to Zboril from behind the net, and Zboril blasted one in for his second goal of the season. Cam Hughes picked up his first career point on the play as the P-Bruins led 4-1 after 40 minutes. Bridgeport ramped up their attack in the third, putting 20 shots on McIntyre, but in the end the final period remained scoreless and Providence won 4-1.

McIntyre stopped 44 of 45 shots while Gudlevskis stopped 39 of 43. Providence was 1-3 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins are back in action Friday when they kick off their annual Star Wars Weekend at the Dunk at 7:05pm vs Lehigh Valley.
