Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power beat the Lakewood BlueClaws 9-1 Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power plated runs in five different innings and came within two outs of shutting out the BlueClaws for the second straight game.
West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Willy Garcia and Dan Gamache. In the third, Alen Hanson hit a two-run home run, his 16th of the season, to build a 3-0 advantage. The Power added a run in the fourth on two singles and a ground out before a two run sixth put West Virginia in front 6-0.
Porfirio Lopez was the benefactor of the offense and pitched five shutout innings to help the cause. Lopez allowed five hits and walked three, but held the Lakewood offense without a run during his time on thehill.
The Power would score three more times in the seventh inning. Taylor Lewis singled and moved to third on a base hit by Gregory Polanco. A sacrifice fly by Garcia made it a 7-0 lead before Gamache and Junior Sosa reached on errors to load the bases. Chris Lashmet singled in Polanco and Francisco Aponte singled in Gamache to close out West Virginia's scoring at nine runs.
In the top of the ninth with one down, Brian Pointer and William Carmona reached on consecutive singles against Joan Montero. Pointer broke up the shutout when he scored on a sacrifice fly from Miguel Alvarez.
West Virginia shutout Lakewood 2-0 on Friday. The Power have not recorded back-to-back shutouts since May of the 2010 season and the BlueClaws have not been blanked in consecutive games since the 2008 season and both of those streak will remain intact.
Lopez (2-2) earned the win while Colin Kleven (6-8) was charged with the loss. The Lakewood starter allowed six runs on nine hits over four and two-thirds innings pitched. Every Power player had at least one hit and the offense was paced by multi-hit games from Gamache, Garcia, and Lewis.
West Virginia and Lakewood will meet Sunday afternoon in the third game of this series at Appalachian Power Park. The Power send Robby Rowland (6-3) to the mound against the BlueClaws' Moises Rivas (2-1) at 2:05 pm.
SECOND HALF RECORD: 24-19
OVERALL RECORD: 47-66
