AUGUSTA, GA - Brett Gerritse hurled six innings of shutout relief for his fourth win as the Charleston RiverDogs shutout the Augusta GreenJackets 6-0 on Saturday night in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The RiverDogs have taken the first two games of this four game series to up their record to 59-51 (20-23 in the second half). The GreenJackets sixth straight loss puts their record at 52-59 (20-22 in the second half).
The RiverDogs used small ball to seize the advantage in the third inning against starter Paul Davis (5-5). Francisco Arcia (2-3, RBI, run) and Cody Grice began the frame with singles and were bunted to second and third. An Ali Castillo (2-4, RBI, run) single brought in one run and a Cito Culver sacrifice fly scored the second for a 2-0 lead.
Charleston added single runs in the fourth and fifth to increase their lead to four. The first tally came when Saxon Butler singled and later scored on a groundout by Arcia. One inning later, a Ben Gamel triple scored Castillo, who had doubled.
The 4-0 lead was entrusted to Gerritse (4-5) after starter Scottie Allen began the game by throwing up a pair of zeroes with four strikeouts. The GreenJackets were only able to collect four hits and work one walk against the right-hander in six innings. He also struck out four. After Cuvler (1-4, 3 RBI) provided some insurance in the top of the ninth with a two-RBI single, Nick Goody secured the shutout with a perfect bottom of the inning.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 5:35 pm with the RiverDogs starting RHP Bryan Mitchell (7-8, 5.13 ERA) against LHP Edwin Escobar (4-7, 3.66 ERA).
