Four-Run Seventh Vaults Shorebirds to 7-6 Win

Greensboro, NC - The Delmarva Shorebirds (17-24) used two big innings to defeat the Greensboro Grasshoppers (19-24) 7-6 on Saturday night at NewBridge Bank Park. The series is tied at one game apiece.

Greensboro struck first in the third inning. With two outs, the Grasshoppers recorded four hits and four runs. Austin Barnes hit a single to left to score the first run. Then, Aaron Senne hit a homer to right-center field to give the 'Hoppers a 3-0 edge. Later in the inning, John Schultz singled home Josh Adams.

The Shorebirds responded in the fifth inning. Mikey Planeta reached on an error by the first baseman. Then, Jerome Pena singled. Connor Narron then grounded to short and in an effort to convert a double play, the shortstop Austin Nola threw wild to first, allowing Planeta to score. Later in the inning, Wynston Sawyer connected on a two-run single to center field to trim the gap to 4-3.

The Shorebirds took the lead in the seventh inning. Michael Ohlman drew a one out walk. Two batters later, Sawyer singled to right field to put runners at the corners. Ohlman scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Then, Sammie Starr hit a high chopper towards short that scored Sawyer. Later, Roderick Bernadina hit a sharp single into center field to stretch the lead to 7-4.

Greensboro chipped away in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Austin Barnes hit a home run. In the eighth, Wilfredo Gimenez scored Matt Smith on a grounder to short to cut the deficit to 7-6.

Zach Petersime, who also pitched the eighth inning, picked up his fifth save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

Eric Wooten earned his first win with the Shorebirds over 2.1 innings. He gave up just one hit and one run.

Shorebirds starter Zach Davies settled for a no decision over 4.2 innings. He surrendered eight hits and four runs. Five of the eight hits and all four of the runs were in the third inning.

Sawyer anchored the Shorebirds offense with two hits and two RBIs.

The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game three of the series on Sunday, August 5 at 4:00pm.
