Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost to the Charleston RiverDogs 16-2 Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. The RiverDogs had two ten-batter, five runs innings en route to their third straight win in this series against the Power.
Charleston took a 3-0 lead of West Virginia's Zack Fuesser ig the first and added a solo home run in the second by Kelvin De Leon to build a 4-0 lead.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Power plated their first run on a Gregory Polanco double that brought Dan Gamache home. Charleston responded with a five run top of the fifth against Fuesser and West Virginia reliever Mike Jefferson.
The Power trailed 10-2 after the fifth came to a close thanks to an RBI single by Jodaneli Carvajal.
The RiverDogs added a run in the eighth on an Angelo Gumbs solo home run and scored five more in the ninth against Jefferson and Jordan Cooper.
Fuesser (0-1) took the loss after allowing nine runs, all earned, on ten hits over four and a third innings of work. Bryan Mitchell (3-2) pitched six innings for the win and John Brebbia pitched the final three frames for his first save of the season.
In the loss, West Virginia allowed a season-high 18 hits. The 16 runs scored matched the most surrendered by Power pitching this season. The loss was also West Virginia's seventh in a row, matching their longest losing stretch this season.
The Power and RiverDogs conclude this series on Sunday at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia will send Zack Dodson to the hill against the Charleston's Scottie Allen at 2:05 pm.
