Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets had late chances, stranding five runners in the final three innings, but fell just short in the clutch during a 2-1 loss to the Greenville Drive on Saturday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The loss - Augusta's second straight - evens the series at two games apiece with Sunday's game serving as the rubber match in the series.
Greenville struck first off Kyle Crick with a two-out RBI single by Blake Swihart in the second inning. The Drive got another in the fifth when Keury De La Cruz beat out a double play ball to bring home a run and make it a 2-0 game. Crick (1-2) showed some of his best command of the year - walking only one and hitting only one - but was a victim of poor run support. In five innings, Crick allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five.
The GreenJackets couldn't solve Greenville starter Henry Owens, who held Augusta to two hits in six scoreless innings. Owens (3-1) walked three and struck out eight, equaling his career-best.
In the seventh, the GreenJackets broke through against Drive reliever Tyler Wilson. Jeff Arnold singled to open the frame for Augusta and came around to score with two outs on John Eshleman's RBI single to put the GreenJackets on the board. Eshleman was left at first when the inning ended - the first of three straight innings where the GreenJackets would strand the tying run on base. Alberto Robles led off the eighth with a single but was stranded at third to end the inning.
Against Tyler Lockwood in the ninth inning, the GreenJackets loaded the bases with two outs for the top of their order. Robles, however, grounded out on the first pitch to end the game as Lockwood picked up his third save of the year in his first appearance since combining with two other Greenville pitchers to no-hit the Rome Braves on Tuesday.
With the series even at a game apiece, the GreenJackets send Kevin Couture (1-1, 1.89) to the mound in his first start of the year in search of the series win. Greenville will counter will fellow righty Madison Younginer (1-3, 4.85). First pitch comes at 2:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
