POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost to Charleston 8-4 in 10 innings on Friday night. The RiverDogs took a 4-0 lead after six innings, but the Power rallied to tie the game with a run in the eighth and three in the bottom of the ninth. Carlos Mesa delivered a double with the bases loaded to bring home the game tying run in the ninth. Charleston plated four in the tenth inning against Orlando Castro to claim the win.
SIX STRAIGHT: The Power have lost six in a row heading into this evening's game against the RiverDogs. Of West Virginia's 23 defeats this season, 21 of them have come during some sort of losing streak. The Power lost five straight during the opening road trip of the season, seven in a row from April 16 through 24, three in a row April 27-29, and now this six game run.
COMING THROUGH IN THE CLUTCH: Carlos Mesa was hitless in his last four games prior to last night and was hitless in his first three at bats to drop into an 0-19 drought. The outfielder's two base hit snapped that skid and allowed Mesa to drive in runs for the first time since May 4.
17! Junior Sosa's ninth inning walk extended his current on-base streak to 17 straight games dating back to April 17. The outfielder's streak is the longest by any Power player this season, surpassing Alen Hanson's 16-game April hitting streak. Sosa is batting .327 during his last 17 games and has an on-base percentage of .437 during this span.
TROUBLE STARTS EARLY: Charleston's leadoff batters have reached 17 times in 19 innings of play so far this series. The RiverDogs have gotten the first batter on by a base hit 11 times, by a walk three times, a hit batter twice, and once on a Power error. Of the 19 leadoff batters for Charleston in the series, nine have scored a run.
RELIEVERS ROTATED: Pittsburgh made two roster moves on Friday that affect West Virginia's bullpen. Justin Ennis and Joan Montero were transferred to the State College Spike roster. The Pirates transferred Josh Poytress back from Altoona and sent Porifiro Lopez down from Bradenton to fill the void. Ennis has a 6.48 ERA for the Power over seven appearances while Montero has a 23.50 ERA after four games. Neither player had factored in any decisions during their time on the roster. Poytress and Lopez have each already spent time on the Power roster this season.
WEST V. SOUTH: West Virginia and Charleston will meet for a total of 14 games against each other in 2012 after having met 15 times in 2011. The RiverDogs have won all six previous meeting between the teams this season and own a 22-19 edge in the all-time series dating back to 2005. West Virginia has a record of 9-8 at home in this series and has gone 10-14 since 2005 at Charleston's Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park down south.
PROMO UPDATE- MAY 25: The Power will play a day-night doubleheader on May 25 against Kannapolis. The first game will start at 11:05 am and will be the final Grand Slam School Day of the season. The 7:05 pm nightcap will serve as a Hometown Heros game with a special discounted ticket package available for local law enforcement, fire, and life safety personnel.
POWER POINTS: Chris Lashmet has an active 16 game on-base streaks heading into his next contest... The Pittsburgh Pirates transferred Francisco Diaz to West Virginia's roster on Wednesday from Bradenton.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 1-0 to the Houston Astros at PNC Park... Indianapolis beat Norfolk 4-1... Altoona was doubled up 8-4 by fell 7-3 at Erie... Bradenton dropped a 4-3 decision in 10 innings against Clearwater. Gift Ngeope hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to sendthe game to extra innings.
