Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 11-3 on Saturday night to the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park. The Legends scored at least one run in four different innings and sent nine to the plate in the sixth to seal the victory and even this five game series at one win apiece.
Lexington jumped to an early 3-0 lead against West Virginia starter Zack Von Rosenberg. Delino DeShields Jr and Ben Orloff each singled to begin the game, and both scored on a double to left-center by Domingo Santana. One out later, Santana crossed home on a ground out to extend the lead to three runs.
In the home half of the first, the Power cut into the deficit with a run. West Virginia loaded the bases with singles by Drew Maggi and Andy Vasquez and a walk of Justin Howard. Chase Lyles singled in onerun, but the Power could not further capitalize and left the bases full.
The Legends added a run in the top of the second on back-to-back doubles, but the Power answered on consecutive doubles by Maggi and Vasquez to trail 4-2 after two.
Neither club scored a run in the third, but the offensive attack resumed in the fourth inning. Emilo King hit a two-run home run off Zack Von Rosenberg in to top half of the inning to extend the Lexington lead to 6-2. West Virginia again countered with a run in their half of the inning. Kevin Mort walked and scored on a double by Maggi, who was thrown out trying to turn the hit into a triple.
The Legends scored five runs in the sixth to extend their lead to eight runs at 11-3. Telvin Nash keyed the charge with a three-run home run off Vince Payne as Lexington sent nine to the plate in the inning, using a total of five hits and one Power error to generate the five-run inning.
Von Rosenberg (4-9) took the loss after allowing the first six runs on nine innings, while Luis Cruz (4-4) gained the win with five innings of work. The Legends amassed 18 hits in the game, including nine of the extra base variety. Seven of the nine players in the lineup had at least two hits for Lexington, while Maggi, Vasquez, and Lyles combined for all of the Power's nine hits.
The Power and Legends play at 2:05 pm on Sunday at Appalachian Power Park. 2010 first round draft choice Jameson Taillon is slated to make his final home start of the season for West Virginia and will be opposed by David Martinez for Lexington.
