SAVANNAH, Ga. - Alonzo Harris racked up four hits and scored five runs to pace a Savannah attack which pounded out 18 hits in a 15-3 Sand Gnats victory over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action Saturday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Savannah improved its mark to 38-25 and 76-55 overall with the victory, while Charleston fell to 24-38 and 50-82 overall.
Charleston's Nathan Forer (2-8) worked around a leadoff double in the first inning, but had no such luck in the second as Savannah erupted to take a 6-0 lead.
Joe Bonfe was hit by a pitch leading off the frame, and scored two batters later on an Aderlin Rodriguez two-run homer to left field. Forer's command continued to escape him, as he plunked Harris and walked Darrell Ceciliani to set it up for Wilfredo Tovar, who delivered a RBI double inside the third base line for a 3-0 Sand Gnats advantage.
Two more run-scoring two-out hits followed as Forer couldn't find the pitch to stop the bleeding. Rafael Fernandez ripped a two-run single to right, and Albert Cordero capped the wild rally with a RBI single in front of Taylor Grote in right.
Savannah kept piling on in the fourth, pushing the cushion to 8-0. Harris accounted for the first marker with his third home of the year deep over the left field fence. Fernandez racked up his third RBI of the night with a single to score Tovar for an eight run lead.
Forer was hit around in his 4.0 innings of work, allowing the eight runs on nine hits and two walks while fanning two.
Erik Goeddel (3-4) was brilliant over 6.0 shutout frames, allowing only one hit while walking three and punching out eight.
The Sand Gnats kept at it against the RiverDogs bullpen, scoring three times in both the sixth and eighth innings as well as one tally in the seventh. Harris' two-run eighth inning long ball - his second of the night and fourth of the season - punctuated that damage.
The RiverDogs finally got on the board in the ninth by collecting three runs against Sand Gnats' reliever Adam Kolarek.
Wes Wilson produced an RBI groundout for the first run, and Jose Toussen laced a two-run double to right to drive home two runs and account for the final 15-3 tally.
The Charleston nine heads back to the diamond for a Sunday matinee with the Sand Gnats tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. Left-hander Vidal Nuno (1-1, 2.67 ERA) is scheduled to head to the apex of the diamond for Charleston, versus right-hander Yohan Almonte (7-7, 4.02 ERA) of Savannah.
