Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA -The Kannapolis Intimidators defeated the Rome Braves 7-6 Saturday night at State Mutual Stadium before a sellout crowd of 5,105. Thirteen hits were not enough to lift the Braves as their winning streak is stopped at five in the extra inning defeat. Games three and four will be tomorrow in an afternoon double header beginning at 2 pm.
Tommy La Stella (8) got the Braves on the board in the bottom of the first with a towering solo homer to right. After David Rohm singled in the bottom of the second Matt Weaver brought home another run when he laced an RBI double to score Rohm and make it a 2-0 ballgame. In the top of the fifth Marcus Semien jump started the Kannapolis offense when he roped a one out triple. After Drew Lee walked, Semien scored when Leighton Pangilinan reached on a fielder's choice. A Matt Weaver error extended the inning and allowed Pangilinan to move up to third base. Keenyn Walker then stepped to the plate and brought home the second run of the inning with a two out RBI infield single to tie the game at 2-2.
Kannapolis opened up a big inning in the top of the seventh by putting up four runs and taking a commanding 6-2 lead. Walker hit his second RBI single of the night to bring home the first run of the inning followed by an RBI double by Carlos Sanchez. After an intentional walk of Dan Black, Trayce Thompson dealt the biggest blow of the inning with a two RBI single.
After Rohm and Weaver hit back to back singles in the bottom of the seventh, Kyle Rose delivered an RBI single to left to score Rohm and narrow the score to 6-3. Matt Lipka then walked on four pitches to load the bases for La Stella who yanked a two RBI single to right. With Lipka standing at third and still down 6-5, Evan Gattis delivered a game tying RBI single up the middle to finish off the four run inning.
The 6-6 tie would take the game into extra innings but a Dan Black (18) solo homer in the top of the tenth would be the difference maker as the Braves fall 7-6
Chris Bassitt (3-1) earns the win for Kannapolis while Chasen Shreve (5-6) takes the loss for Rome. Nick McCully picks up his third save.
The Braves and Intimidators will play an afternoon double header tomorrow with the first pitch of game one coming at 2pm.. For ticket information, contact the Rome Braves at 706-378-5144 or log onto www.romebraves.com.
