Record-Setting Slugfest Won by Tourists

Asheville, NC- The Hagerstown Suns (71-60, 31-30) were involved in a record-setting offensive avalanche at McCormick Field with the Asheville Tourists (64-67, 33-29) on Saturday night. The Tourists crushed their way to a 21-11 triumph in series game two to take a two game lead in the five game series with 23 hits and eight dingers. Two South Atlantic League records were set in the contest and three marks were tied. With 21 extra base hits, Asheville and Hagerstown gathered the most collective hits for at least two bags in one game in SAL history and together the clubs collected 55 total bases, a new SAL single game mark. The following achievements were single-game record tying feats: Most extra-base hits by one team (Asheville ripped 16) and most home runs by one team (eight slugged by Tourists). Also, in the last two games the Tourists cranked 10 home runs, tying a SAL feat.

Asheville RHP Nick Schnaitmann (6-1), the winning pitcher, tossed 5.0 innings and allowed seven runs, six earned, on six hits, while walking three and fanning four, giving up one home run, a two-run shot by 1B Brett Newsome over the "blue monster" wall in right field, his sixth of the season.

Four members of the Hagerstown Suns were ejected by home plate umpire, Ryan Clark including Manager Brian Daubach in the 1st inning along with C Adrian Nieto for arguing balls and strikes with a 3-0 count on CF Rafael Ortega, the first batter of the inning. Then, hitting coach, Marlon Anderson was tossed arguing a controversial call at third base in which both 2B Adrian Sanchez and SS Blake Kelso were both called out standing on the third base bag after a 5-2-5-1 fielder's choice by C David Freitas. Then LHP Robbie Ray was shown the showers on a play at the plate on a two-run double by C Dustin Garneau.

Ray (2-3), the losing pitcher of record, went 3.1 innings before he was tossed, surrendering seven runs, six of them earned, on six hits, three walks, while collecting four strikeouts.

Asheville's record-tying eight home run blasts came off the sticks of 2B Brett Tanos, Garneau, DH Corey Dickerson, 1B Mark Tracy, and RF Avery Barnes. Tanos hit a pair of solo homers in the 5th and 6th innings, both to left field, his 9th and 10th of the campaign. Garneau ripped a 3-run shot over the batter's eye in the 7th stanza. Dickerson had his second three-home run game of the season sending big flies over the right field wall in the 4th, a two-run shot, a two-run liftoff in the 5th over the center field fence, and a towering screamer over the right field barrier in the 7th, numbers 28 to 30. Tracy's solo four bagger in the 4th inning was his eight of the year. Barnes crushed a solo longshot over everything in right field in the 5th inning, his 7th this year.

Suns RHP Wilson Eusebio gave up seven runs on five home runs in 1.1 innings and RHP Shane McCatty allowed three home runs and seven runs in 2.0 innings.

The Suns plated two runs in the 3rd inning on a two-run double by Sanchez to the right field corner, three in the 5th frame on a two-run double by Freitas smoked to the left center field fence and an RBI double right behind him off the bat of RF Kevin Keyes to the right field alley way. In the 8th inning, Hagerstown plated a trio of runs on an RBI single to right field scoring LF Mills Rogers of the bat of CF Michael Taylor, an RBI walk by Kelso, and a sacrifice fly by Sanchez to right center field. In the 9th, Taylor was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for an RBI but it was way too little, too late.

The Suns continue their last bus trip of the season in Asheville playing the Tourists at 2:05pm on Sunday afternoon. Hagerstown will bring LHP Matt Grace (12-6, 4.49) to the bump to face Asheville RHP Peter Tago (3-5, 7.07) in series game three.
