Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Drive (73-59, 35-27) are in a position where they basically control their own destiny if they wish to advance to the South Atlantic League for the third consecutive season. And after two games of their series with the Augusta GreenJackets (65-65, 34-26), they have answered the call, capturing a 10-3 victory Saturday night at Fluor Field.
After an inning and a half, it appeared as if the GreenJackets were going to rebound following last night's dominating performance from Brandon Workman. The visitors struck for three runs off of Scott Swinson, albeit only one was earned thanks to a throwing error by Xander Bogaerts.
But Greenville quickly answered, tying the game in the home half of the inning, which ignited a scoring barrage. Each of the first four batters reached base safely, beginning with Christian Vazquez's single which was followed by a two-run homer off the bat of Xander Bogaerts. Henry Ramos then walked, and advanced to third on Michael Almanzar's double, setting up David Renfroe's sacrifice fly that tied the game.
Vazquez, who finished a perfect 4-for-4, gave Greenville a lead they would not relinquish as he crushed a solo homer in the bottom of the third. After being held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, the Drive pounced for five runs over their next two at bats.
In the bottom o f the fifth, Vazquez was at it again as he, along with Bogaerts each recorded an RBI-double. An inning later Brandon Jacobs roped a two-run double of his own, and Sean Coyle scored on a wild pitch.
The Drive added one final run in the bottom of the eighth for good measure, as Vazquez completed his perfect night at the dish with an RBI-single.
Pitching on four days rest, Swinson (5-4) allowed just three hits and a walk over 5.0 innings, while striking out three before turning the game over to the bullpen. Charle Rosario and Michael Olmsted combined to keep Augusta scoreless for three innings, until the GreenJackets scored in the top of the ninth against Dennis Neuman.
After issuing four base on balls and only recording two outs, Neuman was lifted for Tyler Lockwood who struckout Bobby Haney to end the game.
The Drive and GreenJackets meet in the third contest of the five-game series on Sunday, with first pitch set for 4:05 PM from Fluor Field. Right-hander Keith Couch (6-4, 3.09 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville, while Augusta counters with left-hander Mario Rodriguez (7-5, 4.61 ERA).
Tomorrow is the final Family FunDay at the ballpark, in which kids 12 and under get to run the bases at the conclusion of the game. Prior to the game, the Drive and Michelin North America will recognize the Summer Reading All-Stars.
