Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power knocked off the Charleston RiverDogs 13-6 Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Power sent ten men to the plate in the seventh inning and scored six runs to break open a tied game and secure the win.
The RiverDogs took a 1-0 lead off Tyler Waldron in the first inning, but the Power answered quickly in the bottom of the first with a run to tie the game. In the second, West Virginia added three, keyed by a wild pitch from Charleston starter Zach Nuding and a base hit by Andy Vasquez, to build a 4-1 edge.
Charleston sent Waldron to the clubhouse in the third inning with four runs on three hits and took a 5-4 lead. Kevin Mahoney doubled with the bases loaded to provide the key blow.
The one run lead held until West Virginia's half of the six. With two outs, Kevin Mort singled and scored on a two-base hit by Drew Maggi.
In the seventh, the Power offense clicked against reliever Tommy Kahnle. West Virginia batted around plus one, scoring six times on four hits, two walks, and two Charleston errors.
West Virginia added two runs in the eighth on one hit, two walks, and two hit batters to cap their scoring at 13 runs. Charleston plated one in the ninth to close out the offense for the night.
Victor Black (2-0) pitched on scoreless inning and was the benefactor of the six-run seventh for the win, while Kahnle (1-3) took the loss after two-thirds of an inning of work. Nine of the ten players used offensively for the Power reached on a base hit, and the one who didn't, Kawika Emsley-Pai, walked three times and scored two runs.
West Virginia's win was its second straight after seven consecutive losses. The Power's 14 hit attack coupled with five Charleston errors provided the ammunition to event West Virginia's home record out at 22-22.
The Power and RiverDogs play the second game of this three-game set on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm.
