
Negus makes the most of spot start against Lakewood

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Starting pitcher Phil Negus tossed six strong inning, and Dusty Harvard drove in his first runs since his promotion from Bristol as the Kannapolis Intimidators clipped the Lakewood BlueClaws, 5-3, on Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in front of 3,2.05 in attendance. The Intimidators have now won 10 of their last 13 games.
Negus (2-0) made the most of a spot start, his third of the year, allowing one run on five hits over a career-best six innings pitched for the win. He fanned a season-high six batters while walking two.
Kannapolis pulled ahead with four runs in the fifth inning. Harvard drove in Juan Silverio to tie the game, 1-1. Two batters later, Marcus Semien stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and grounded a ball into right field scoring Miguel Gonzalez and Harvard. Brady Shoemaker added a sacrifice fly to score Carlos Sanchez for a 4-1 Intimidators lead.
Harvard cashed Silverio again in the sixth inning giving Kannapolis a 5-1 lead, and he finished the day 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, his first since the White Sox promoted him to Kannapolis from Rookie-level Bristol on July 7.
Lakewood's Cameron Rupp doubled to lead off the third inning, advanced to third base on a Carlos Alonso sacrifice bunt, and scored on Edgar Duran's sacrifice fly. Rupp sac fly brought in Anthony Hewitt who slide under the tag to cut the Intimidators lead to 5-2.
Nick McCully tossed the final three innings for Kannapolis for his second save of the season.
Lakewood's Garett Claypool took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
