Crawdads Cruise Past Shorebirds, 8-1

Salisbury, Md. - The Hickory Crawdads (55-36, 15-8) scored six unanswered runs between the third and fifth innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds (45-48, 10-13) 8-1 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Saturday night. The Shorebirds managed just one hit in the final four innings and just seven for the night.

The Crawdads got off to a good start with two runs in the second. Christian Villanueva led off with a single and stole second. He moved to third on a fielder's choice by Tomas Telis. After a walk to Jake Skole, Jhonny Gomez hit a sacrifice fly liner to right field to score Villanueva. Telis would later score from third when Skole was caught running from first and second.

The Shorebirds responded in the bottom of the second with a run. Jeremy Nowak led off with a single lined into center field. After stealing second, he scored on a flare into left-center field by Garabez Rosa to trim the deficit to 2-1.

The Crawdads added two runs in the third. Odubel Herrera singled and reached third on a two-base throwing error to first on a pickoff move by Cameron Roth. Then, Andrew Clark doubled to increase the lead to 3-1. Later in the inning, Telis hit a single to plate Clark.

Hickory added two more in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a Gomez two-run single to build an 8-1 lead.

Crawdads starter Joe Van Meter hurled four innings and allowed just three hits and one run. ‘Dads reliever Ben Henry (4-0) entered in the fifth and tossed four scoreless innings to earn the win. He struck out six and walked just one batter. Jorge Marban came on in the ninth inning and closed out the Shorebirds.

Cameron Roth (3-2) made his fourth start of the season and lasted four innings. He surrendered nine hits and six runs. Luis Noel made his first relief appearance of the season and gave up three hits and two runs over three innings.

Ashur Tolliver tossed two scoreless innings after Noel. Tolliver has not allowed a run in seven outings at Perdue Stadium (12.0 IP).

Garabez Rosa paced the Shorebirds offense with a 3-for-4 night. Rosa is riding a seven-game hit streak and has eight hits in his last three games.

The Delmarva Shorebirds and Hickory Crawdads play game two of the series on Sunday night at 5:05 p.m. LHP Tim Berry is the scheduled starter for the Shorebirds.
