Lakewood Downed 5-3 By Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Lakewood BlueClaws dropped the first game of their 3 game series in Kannapolis with a 5-3 loss to the Intimidators on Saturday night. Lakewood was on top 1-0 after 4 ½ innings, but Kannapolis scored 4 times in the bottom of the 5th and never looked back. The BlueClaws are now 12-11 in the Second Half, and a game under .500 overall at 45-46.

Anthony Hewitt busted out of his mini slump with a 2-4 game. Hewitt doubled, tripled, drove in a run, and scored a run as well. Travis Mattair and Cameron Rupp each continue to rake for Lakewood as well as they each chipped in with 2 hits in the ballgame. The BlueClaws got the tying run in the batter's box in the 9th with just 1 out, but Cameron Rupp and Jeff Lanning each struck out swinging to end the game.

Garett Claypool started and got the loss for Lakewood as he fell to 3-5 on the year. He lasted 5 1/3rd innings allowing 5 hits and 5 runs/3 earned with 6 strikeouts. Lendy Castillo pitched well in relief for Lakewood getting the final 8 outs allowing only 1 hit. Kannapolis starter Phil Negus was fantastic allowing only 1 run on 5 hits over 6 innings while fanning 6. Negus improved to 2-0 on the year while Nick McCully pitched the 7th, 8th, and 9th inning to get his 2nd save this year with Kannapolis.

Lakewood will start RHP Lisalberto Bonilla (1-2, 1.82 ERA) on Sunday for game 2 of the 3 game series. Kannapolis will send out RHP Matt Heidenreich (7-5, 4.35 ERA). First Pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm on Sunday.
