POWER REPLAY: The Power and Shorebirds were rained out on Saturday. On Friday, West Virginia beat Delmarva 3-2 on to open the final series of the season. Nick Kingham pitched into the seventh inning for the first time in his professional career, allowing one hit over the first six innings. The Power plated runs in the second and fourth before the Shorebirds tied the game in the seventh. Taylor Lewis hit a two out, solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to push West Virginia back in front. Robbie Kilcrease earned the win and Nathan Kilcrease worked a perfect ninth for the save.
LET'S PLAY TWO: The Power are 6-6on doubleheader days this season. West Virginia has swept one so far this season, split four, and have gotten swept once (Wednesday/ Thursday at Charleston). The Power and Shorebirds have met in doubleheaders six times since 2005 with the Power going 9-3 on those days.
HONORED: Gregory Polanco and Alen Hanson were honored by the South Atlantic League on the 2012 Annual All-Star Team. Polanco was named as the league's Most Outstanding Major League Prospect and All-Star Outfielder while Hanson was honored as the league All-Star at shortstop. They are the tenth and 11th Power players to be selected as Annual All-Stars and the first since 2009. Polanco joins Rudy Owens (2009 Pitcher of the Year) as the only two West Virginia players to be selected for any of the SAL's top three awards.
FINALE SERIES OF 2012: Delmarva leads the all-time series 52-51, but the Power still have the edge at Appalachian Power Park, having won 32 and lost 27 at home since 2005. The Shorebirds have won eight of 13 so far in 2012, though the Power could split the set with a sweep this weekend.
KINGHAM IN CONTROL: Nick Kingham's final start of the year was his 27th, tying him with Greg Kloosterman's 2005 total for second most in Power history. Only Evan Anundsen started more games in a single season for West Virginia (28 in 2008). Kingham finished with a flourish, striking out nine Shorebirds on Friday to push his season total to 117, third most all time behind Will Inman (134 in 2006) and Kyle McPherson (124 in 2010).
TAKE TWO: Dan Gamache doubled twice on Friday to tie and subsequently pass Caleb Gindl for the Power's single season doubles record. Gindl knocked 38 two-base hits during the 2008 season, and several players have gotten within striking distance during the Pirates affiliation. Gamache's second inning double matched the record. The Power second baseman's leadoff double in the seventh set the new mark.
END OF THE ROAD: West Virginia concluded its 2012 road schedule on Thursday with a win. The Power went 7-29 on the roadin the first half of the season, but have gone 19-16 away from home in the second half. The 26 total road victories is a new club record low for a full season, one less that the 27 by the inaugural 2005 team. The 2012 edition also lost more road games in a single season than any other team in Power history, though the team did play 71 road games this season rather than 70 due to an April rainout that was made up at Asheville.
POWER POINTS: Nick Kingham's nine strikeouts on Friday were the most by a West Virginia pitcher in a single game this season. Zack Dodson, Robby Rowland, and Zac Fuesser had each recorded a previous high of eight strikeouts in a game this year with the later accomplishing the feat twice... Alen Hanson's triple on Thursday was his 13th of the season, matching Andy Vasquez's Charleston SAL record set in 2011... Nathan Kilcrease earned his 14th save last night to match Robert Hinton's 2005 record.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell 3-2 in walk-off fashion at Milwaukee... Indianapolis doubled up Toledo 8-4... Altoona beat Erie 4-1... Bradenton lost 5-4 at St. Lucie in 10 innings... State College slipped past Jamestown 3-2.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, West Virginia, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
