AUGUSTA, GA - Nick McCoy and Casey McGehee both drove in two runs for the Charleston RiverDogs as they knocked off the Augusta GreenJackets 5-1 in their penultimate game of the season in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Sunday evening.
The victory was the third in a row for Charleston and their ninth in their last ten games, giving them a record of 72-63 (33-35 in the second half). Augusta's third straight loss puts them at 69-69 (37-32 in the second half).
The RiverDogs scored the first run of the evening in the second inning on an Eduardo Sosa RBI single. Augusta responded in their half of the second when Myles Schroder (2-5, run) singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Elliot Blair.
It didn't take long for Charleston to regain the lead as McGehee lashed a two-run double off the left field wall against starter Kevin Couture (2-7) to put his team in front 3-1. The base hit gave McGehee six RBIs in his last three games.
Zach Arneson was entrusted with holding the lead, as he replaced starter Brett Gerritse in the fifth after Gerritse threw the first four innings. In his RiverDogs' debut, Arneson (1-0) did not allow a hit in two frames and struck out one to earn the win.
In the seventh, Will Oliver replaced Arneson and put up another zero. McCoy (2-4, 2 RBI) then provided some insurance in the eighth by sending a two-run single back through the middle for his first two RBIs as a RiverDog to extend the lead to 5-1. Oliver fired another scoreless inning and Adam Smith finished the evening with a shutout ninth.
The final game of 2012 for the Charleston RiverDogs is scheduled for Monday afternoon at 2:05 pm. The RiverDogs will send RHP Bryan Mitchell (8-11, 4.82 ERA) out to pitch against RHP Paul Davis (6-7, 3.56 ERA).
