Crawdads Cruise Past Drive, 8-4

GREENVILLE, SC - The Hickory Crawdads cruised past the Greenville Drive, 8-4, before 7,032 fans at Fluor Field in Greenville on Sunday evening .

Hickory (38-31, 74-64) raced in front with six runs in a big top of the second inning against RHP Madison Younginer (L, 1-8). Back-to-back singles by C Jorge Alfaro and 1B Kevin Torres opened the inning with runners at first and third. Alfaro then darted home from third on a wild pitch by Younginer, opening the scoring. After CF Jordan Akins worked a walk, both he and Torres advanced to second and third, respectively, on a ground out by RF Hirotoshi Onaka. SS Luis Sardinas plated Torres with an RBI sacrifice fly, making it 2-0. 2B Rougned Odor worked a two-out walk to extend the frame and join Akins on the bases, before they both raced home on a two-run double by 3B Drew Robinson. LF Trever Adams put the finishing touch on the ralley with a two-run home run over the center field wall, making it 6-0.

An RBI double by DH Drew Turocy in the bottom of the second got Greenville (31-37, 65-73) on the board, but the 'Dads stretched it back out in the top of the fifth. Adams led off with a base hit and quickly swiped second base. Later in the inning, he came home on a two-out RBI single by Akins, stretching it to a 7-1 lead.

The Drive cut the deficit with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, the final frame for RHP Nick Martinez (W, 8-6). With one away, LF Matt Marquis worked a free pass and then raced all the way in on a double by 2B Jose Garcia with a fielding error by Onaka on the play. After SS Nick Natoli joined Garcia on the bases with a single, Martinez battled back with his eighth strikeout for the frame's second out. However, 3B Garin Cecchini drove a two-run double to left field, bringing the Drive within three runs, 7-4.

Hickory added their final insurance run in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Adams came home on a double play ball hit by Torres, accounting for the eventual final score of 8-4 in the Hickory win. RHP Coby Cowgill and RHP Taylor Dennis bothed logged two scoreless relief innings, closing the Hickory victory.
