POWER REPLAY: West Virginia lost 6-3 at Lexington in the series opener on Wednesday. The Legends took a 1-0 lead of Zack Von Rosenberg in the second inning on a home run by Justin Gominsky before adding a run in the third and four in the fifth. All three of West Virginia's runs crossed in the sixth on a bases loaded double by Chris Lashmet. Von Rosenberg took the loss after allowing all six runs and fell to 3-5 this season. Willy Garcia had the lone multi-hit game for the Power and Lashmet's double was the only extra base hit of West Virginia's seven knocks in the game.
COMPANY IN THE LEAD! West Virginia's loss last night allowed Hickory and Hagerstown to pull even atop the South Atlantic League's Northern Division standings. Each club holds a 25-21 second half record entering play tonight with 24 games remaining. The Power have concluded their season series with the Suns and have four games remaining against the Crawdads. Hagerstown holds the tie breaker against both teams with a better record in head-to-head competition.
POWER V. LEGENDS: West Virginia and Lexington continue their final series of the season tonight. The Power lead the all-time series 77-74 and hold a 41-35 mark at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
NINE TO A DIME: Francisco Diaz has hit safely in his last ten games after going 1-4 last night. West Virginia's backup catcher is hitting .533 during this streak that began on July 13 with 16 hits in his last 30 at bats.
SLASHIN' LASH: Chris Lashmet drove in all three of West Virginia's runs last night for his first three RBI game this season. The Power infielder had driven in two runs in a single game six times and has driven in at least one run in 21 of his 79 games played this season
K IS FOR KINGHAM: Nick Kingham leads the team with 94 strikeouts over a team-high 100.2 innings pitched. Zack Von Rosenberg led the Power in 2011 with 114 over 125.2 innings, Kyle McPherson had 124 in 117.2 innings in 2010, and Gabriel Alvarado had 96 over 114.0 innings in 2009. Should Kingham stay in the rotation on schedule every fifth day, he is on pace to make five more starts. That puts the right-hander on pace to match Von Rosenberg's strikeout total from last season, which was third most in team history.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN: The Power have 10 road games remaining this season spread out over three separate trips. After this series in Lexington ends, West Virginia will have trips left to Kannapolis from August 19-22 and to Charleston, SC, from August 28-30. The Power won a league-low seven games in the first half on the road, but havethe SAL's most second half road victories with 14.
TOP OF THE HITTING HEAP: Alen Hanson and Gregory Polanco rank first and second in the league with 135 and 134 hits apiece, respectively. No Power player has led the South Atlantic League in hits since Lorenzo Cain's 2006 club record 162. Lexington's Delino DeShields, Jr. trails the Power duo in third place with 130.
ROLLIN ON: Gregory Polanco singled once last night to extend his hitting streak to eight games in a row. The Power center fielder is batting .400 over his last eight games and enters play tonight with the second best average (.327) in the league behind Greensboro's Brent Keys (.336).
POWER POINTS: The Power have won eight series, lost 17, and split six so far this season, but have only lost two of 11 series in the second half... Power relievers have inherited 109 runners this season and 49 have scored (46%)... Alen Hanson's home run on Saturday was his first since July 5. The Power shortstop hit 15 home runs during his first 327 at bats of the season and went 93 at bats between his 15th and 16th home runs.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh held off Arizona 7-6 at PNC Park. Neil Walker, Starling Marte, and Jordy Mercer all homered for the Buccos... Indianapolis fell 2-1 to Charlotte... Altoona beat Bowie 7-4 in Tyler Waldron's Double-A debut... Bradenton beat Charlotte 2-1 in 11 innings. Elevys Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the 11th for the winning tally... State College lost 6-3 at Batavia.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com.
