Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Charleston, WV (August 7, 2012) - The West Virginia Power, in conjunction with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Charleston Gold Dome Lions Club (CGDLC) are hosting the 13th Annual Kiss-A-Pig for Diabetes Event at Appalachian Power Park, now through the "Kiss-Off" on Friday evening, August 31st.
Since the pig was the first source of insulin in 1921, the JDRF and Gold Dome Lions recognize the pig for its contribution (its pancreas) to diabetics and love it enough to hold a contest to kiss it. Volunteer candidates seek the most votes to be elected champion pig-kisser for the event. Each "vote" represents a one dollar contribution to the Kiss-A-Pig (KAP) Program. The candidate garnering the most "votes" wins the honor of kissing the pig at Appalachian Power Park on August 31st.
During the game on the 31st the top fundraiser will be announced and have the honor of kissing a live pig named Pedro during a half inning break. Additional activities that night include a silent auction and 50/50 raffle to benefit the JDRF and the CGDLC. Also, there will be post-game fireworks.
The fundraising for Kiss-A-Pig started July 13th and runs through August 31st. Several candidates have already joined the 2012 competition. They are:
Kate Long - writer for the Charleston Gazette and author of "The Shape We're In" series
Wendy Peters of Poca High School
Dr. Lynn Frye - Supervising Veterinarian/Owner of Gateway Animal Hospital in St. Albans
Sarah Jarvis, Psy.D.Mrs. Southern West Virginia
C. Ed Childers, Jr. MD - a pediatrician from South Charleston, WV
Mike Agnello - 58WCHS Radio Host
Ashley SmithWCHS/WVAH-TV Weather Person
Dr. Frye, Wendy and Sarah were at the Appalachian Power Park Friday on 8/3, during the game to campaign. A pig named Elmer was there with owner, Aimee Figgatt. They all took time with visitors, especially kids, to explain why the pig is so loved for helping diabetics.
Aimee says that Pedro, Elmer's daddy, promises to return for the 8/31 Kiss-Off and provide a sweet kiss to the champion pig kisser. He also promises to have another pig or two there on 8/24. Mountaineer star Pat White made an appearance at the Appalachian Power Park and took time out to meet and hold Elmer.
You can "vote" as many times as you like for your candidate by giving your votes (tax deductible dollar[s]) to the KAP Program. Deadline for votes is August 24 (week before Kiss Off) at 11 p.m. or postmarked that day for votes mailed in. Any donations received after that time will not be counted as votes but will be added to overall KAP total from all candidates.
Votes/contributions can be sent in the form of checks and money orders that should be made payable to the KISS-A-PIG Program and have the candidate's name in the memo section and mailed to: Kiss-A-Pig Program, P. O. Box 2385, Charleston, WV 25328.
