
Legends Update: Pennant Race Tightens; Individual Record Watch

Pennant race update : After a 6-2 road trip to Asheville and Hagerstown and a win in the series opener at home against West Virginia last night, the Legend are in second place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division, three and one half games behind the Rome Braves. The Legends still have eight games against Rome this season - four in Rome August 16-19, and four in Lexington August 31-September 3 to close out the season.
The Legends are at home tonight, Friday and Saturday to take on the West Virginia Power, who are tied with Hickory and Hagerstown for first place in the Northern Division. Game time each night is 7:05 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Lexington has won four in a row going into tonight's game.
Record watch
Johnson's RBI record: In Sunday's 16-6 win over Hagerstown, Legends' first baseman Zach Johnson drove in three runs and broke the Legends' single-season RBI record. The three RBI Sunday gave Johnson 100 for the season. The previous record was 98, set by Jake Goebbert in 2010. With one RBI last night, Johnson leads the South Atlantic League in RBI with 101 and is third in Minor League Baseball, trailing only C.J. Cron of Inland Empire in the California League, who has 103, and Jason Martinson who has driven in 102 runs with Hagerstown of the South Atlantic League and Potomac of the Carolina League combined.
Taking 35 for the team : Legends 3B Matt Duffy has been hit by pitches 35 times this season, a new South Atlantic League record. The previous mark was 32, set by Nyjer Morgan of Hickory in 2004.
Legends hits king : 2B Delino DeShields Jr. broke the Legends career record for hits in last night's game. He has 233 hits as a Legend, covering the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The old mark was 231, set by Eric Taylor in 2007 and 2008. DeShields has 130 hits in 2012, third in the South Atlantic League.
Still stealing: DeShields already owns the Legends' single-season and career records for stolen bases. He has 82 stolen bases in 2012, second in all of professional baseball to Cincinnati prospect Billy Hamilton, now with AA Pensacola, who has 131.
Runs record : DeShields is bearing down on the Legends single-season record for runs scored. He has 95 in 2012, tops in the South Atlantic League and three short of the Legends' mark of 98 set by Jon Topolski in 2001.
Leading the way: Legends RHP Mike Foltynewicz (Folt-uh-NEV-itch),13-3 on the season, leads the South Atlantic League in victories, and is two short of the Legends' single-season record of 15 set by Mike Nannini in 2001. Foltynewicz is fifth the league in ERA at 2.93.
Hot bat: Legends' OF Brandon Meredith, who played for Tony Gwynn at San Diego State, is hitting .419 (18-43) over his last 10 games with 10 RBI.
Iron men: Legends' 3B Matt Duffy leads the South Atlantic League in games played with 113, Johnson is second with 112, and DeShields is third with 110.
