POWER REPLAY: West Virginia swept a doubleheader at Rome on Friday night, winning 6-1 and 9-0. Zack Dodson pitched a seven inning complete game as the Power took the early contest. Mike Jefferson, Robbie Kilcrease, and Joan Montero combined to work a two-hit shutout in the nightcap and help West Virginia win three of four in the series.
# WINNING: West Virginia had seven road wins during the entire first half of the 2012 season (7-29). So far in the second half, the Power have already won seven times in 13 chances.
WHITEWASHED: Power pitchers combined for their first shutout of the 2012 season in Friday's nightcap. The 2011 squad worked a league-best 13 shutouts. This edition needed 92 games to notch its first.
GOING, GOING, GONE: West Virginia has now hit 64 home runs through 92 games this season. The 2011 club hit 63 over 138 games.
ERA LEADER... FOR NOW: Matt Benedict's 3.42 ERA will remain as the clubs best until after Monday's game at Augusta. At that point, the right-hander's 76.1 innings pitched will no longer qualify him among the leaders (0.8 IP per team game). Benedict was promoted to Bradenton during the SAL All-Star break.
FOUR! West Virginia and Augusta open a four-game series tonight at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Power trail 23-17 in the all-time series and have gone 10-18 on the road in the series since 2005. This marks the only series this year between the teams during the regular season.
ROME IF YOU WANT TO: With two wins on Friday, West Virginia evened the all-times series with Rome at 14 wins each. The Power have played the Braves less than any other team in the South Atlantic League since 2005.
K KINGS: Nick Kingham leads the team with 73 strikeouts over 78.2 innings pitched. Zack Von Rosenberg led the Power in 2011 with 114 over 125.2 innings, Kyle McPherson had 124 in 117.2 innings in 2010, and Gabriel Alvarado had 96 over 114.0 innings in 2009. Should Kingham stay in the rotation on schedule every fifth day, he is on pace to make 10 more starts. That puts the right-hander on pace to match Von Rosenberg's strikeout total from last season, which was third most in team history.
SOSA RETURNS: The Pittsburgh Pirates have transferred Junior Sosa from Bradenton back to the Power roster and released Vince Payne. Sosa batted .171 for the Marauders over 10 games after a June 14 promotion from West Virginia. He was batting .270 in the South Atlantic League after 51 games when he was sent "up" to Florida. Payne was 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA this season and 7-4 with a 4.93 ERA during his career. The right-hander was selected by the Pirates in the 12th round of the 2010 draft.
PROMO CHECK- JULY 19: West Virginia will host Purple Power Night on July 19. The team will wear purple jerseys that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting pancreatic cancer research.
POWER POINTS: The Power are 4-2 on true doubleheader days this season... Elias Diaz had the longest hitting streak of his career snapped on Friday during game one. Diaz was 0-3 as his eight-game hitting streak was stopped.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh fell 10-7 at Milwaukee. Tony Watson surrendered an eighth-inning grand slam and took the loss... Indianapolis lost 2-0 to Columbus... Altoona was blanked 3-0 by Akron... Bradenton's game was postponed... State College crushed Staten Island 11-2.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
