GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 14, 2012) -- Kannapolis committed three errors in the third inning, opening the door for a six-run Greensboro outburst as the Grasshoppers went on to win 12-2 on Saturday night at NewBridge Bank Park.
In the third inning with the scored tied 2-2, the first three Hoppers reached on a fielding error by Chris Curley, throwing error by Matt Lane and fielding error from Keenyn Walker, then five of the next six Greensboro batters singled.
Greensboro's offense churned out 18 hits, matching the most allowed by Kannapolis this season -- both other 18-hit games also came against the Grasshoppers. Rand Smith led the way with four hits while John Schultz, Austin Barnes, Austin Nola and Tony Caldwell each collected three hits.
Lane (2-3) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (two earned) on nine hits in 2 and 1/3 innings with a pair of walks and strikeouts. Jarrett Casey worked 3 and 2/3 innings of relief before Barnes ended his night with a three-run home run, putting the Grasshoppers up 12-2 with no outs in the seventh.
Josh Hodges (6-6) picked up the win for Greensboro, giving up two runs on six hits in 6 innings while striking out three and walking three.
Greensboro scored first when Nola's two-out double cashed Barnes from third, but Ryan Rieger was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first, ending the inning.
Kannapolis retaliated to open the second inning as Kevan Smith, Leighton Pangilinan, Chris Curley and Bill Rice all singled, tying the game. Martin Medina followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 Intimidators lead before Hodges retired the next two batters to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, with two outs and the tying run on third, Rand Smith legged out an infield single to tie the game, 2-2.
The Intimidators and Grasshoppers play the second game of this four- game series on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at NewBridge Bank Park as Kannapolis sends RHP Erik Johnson (1-2, 2.43) to the mound against Greensboro's RHP Scott Lyman (1-3, 8.37).
