In the 12th, Dan Grovatt singled in Chase Lyles to put West Virginia up for good. Casey Sadler notched the win, while Justin Ennis earned the save. Zack Von Rosenberg retired the first 17 Sand Gnats of the night and pitched six innings total, but did not factor in the decision.
BONUS BASEBALL: The Power are now 5-5 when playing extra innings this season. The club did not go to extra frames until May 23 against Lakewood, the 43rd game of the season.
NO FREE PASSES: West Virginia's pitching staff continues to lead all of baseball with the fewest number of batters walked this year. Power pitchers have combined to walk 210 batters through 94 games. The next closest team is Wilmington in the Carolina League with 225. The lowest Major League club tally is 233 by the Chicago Cubs.
FEW SCORE AGAINST FUESSER: Zac Fuesser pitched a season-high seven innings on Monday night, allowing one run and striking out seven in a no-decision. The southpaw has a 2.31 ERA, which would be the lowest in the league if he had enough innings to qualify. As a starting pitcher this season, Fuesser is 0-2 with a 2.84 earned run average, and is 2-1 with one save as a reliever with a 1.75 ERA.
SOUTHERN SWING: West Virginia continues its seven game road trip tonight and tomorrow in Savannah before heading to Charleston, South Carolina on Saturday. The Power hold an 18-10 all-time series lead against the Sand Gnats, including an 8-5 record at Grayson Stadium. West Virginia is 16-10 all-time against the RiverDogs, including an 8-8 mark at Joseph P. Riley Park.
POWER POUNDER: The Pirates transferred Zac Fuesser to State College and added Brooks Pounders back to the Power roster on Wednesday. Fuesser pitched seven innings Monday and is expected back on the roster to make his next turn through the rotation on Sunday at Charleston. Pounders has only pitched for West Virginia this season, and was transferred to State College on Sunday to clear a roster spot for Colton Cain, who came of the disabled list to start on July 17.
STOPPED AT SEVEN: West Virginia snapped its season-high seven game losing streak with Friday night's win. During this stretch, the team was outscored 50-18 and lost by at least two runs in each game.
VERGE OF HISTORY: Rogelio Noris has 24 career home runs for West Virginia over a season and a half in a Power jersey. Noris has now matched Stephen Chapman for the most home runs in any player's Power career. Chapman hit a single-season record 24 home runs in a Power uniform in 2007.
TRIPLE THREAT: Andy Vasquez's triple Friday gives him nine for the season, tops in the SAL so far. Quincy Latimore holds the club's single season record with 10 during the 2009 season, the team's first year as an affiliate of the Pirates.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia is the only club in the SAL that has not hit a grand slam this season... Rinku Singh has now pitched at four levels in the Pirates organization this season...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh lost 3-1 to Cincinnati Wednesday afternoon, has today off, and opens a series against St. Louis tomorrow... Indianapolis lost 3-2 to Charlotte in 10 innings... Altoona blanked Akron 4-0... Bradenton beat Daytona 7-0... State College edged Mahoning Valley 5-4.
