Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Hagerstown, MD - The Augusta GreenJackets saw their season-long and league-best 11-game winning streak snapped in a doubleheader sweep by the Hagerstown Suns. The Suns extinguished Augusta 4-2 in the opener and the GreenJackets were shutout for the ninth time this season in the nightcap by a 3-0 score.

The GreenJackets offensive attack - potent during the winning streak - was notably absent in the doubleheader sweep. Augusta recorded ten hits or more in eight of the 11 games during the winning streak, but the GreenJackets recorded a total of just seven hits combined in both games of the doubleheader.

Augusta took the first lead of the opener when Josh Mazzola's ninth home run of the year - all hit on the road - cleared the left field fence to give the GreenJackets a 1-0 advantage. The GreenJackets added another in the third when back-to-back hits put Carlos Willoughby at second and Chris Lofton at first. Adam Duvall's grounder to third went under the legs of Hagerstown's third baseman, allowing Willoughby to score and give Augusta a 2-0 lead. Duvall was thrown out at second trying to take two bases on the play to end the inning.

The Suns struck back off Gaspar Santiago in the fourth inning. David Frietas's solo home run put the Suns on the board and cut Augusta's lead to 2-1. Later in the inning, Jason Martinson walked, stole second and then scored on Sean Nicol's game-tying RBI single. The Suns took the lead in the fifth when Adrian Sanchez doubled past Duvall at third with two outs and two strikes to bring home a pair of runs for Hagerstown.

Matt Swynenberg (3-0) took advantage of those runs, getting the win with five solid innings. He allowed two runs - one earned - on four hits while striking out three. Santiago (3-4) scattered four runs - three earned - on eight hits and a walk while striking out four.

In the nightcap, the GreenJackets were dominated by left-hander Ryan Demmin, - appearing for just the third time in a Suns uniform this season, all against the GreenJackets. Demmin (1-1) fired five scoreless innings of two-hit ball, walking two and striking out seven.

Demmin and Augusta starter Justin Schumer locked horns in a solid pitchers' duel through three innings until the Suns cracked through against Schumer in the fourth. With two on base thanks to a pair of walks and one out in the inning, Jason Martinson doubled home both men to give the Suns a 2-0 edge. Martinson scored on Wade Moore's double to push the Hagerstown advantage to three runs.

Schumer (5-5) left after the fourth, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out a pair.

The GreenJackets had their best scoring chance in the fifth when Mazzola doubled to open the frame. With two outs, Joel Weeks drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate for Raynor Campbell - back in the lineup for the first time in a week and a half. Campbell struck out to end the inning and the GreenJackets never again brought the tying run to the plate.

Duvall left the game with an apparent left hamstring injury after grounding out to end the sixth inning. He locked legs with first baseman Russell Moldenhauer while trying to beat out the grounder. He's currently listed as day-to-day.

The GreenJackets send Shawn Sanford (6-6, 2.67) to the mound on Friday to try and salvage the series split in the finale between the two teams after losing their 11-game winning streak in the doubleheader sweep. Hagerstown sends right-hander Chris McKenzie (3-3, 8.36) to counter. First pitch from Hagerstown comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
