Games 15 & 16 | April 23, 2011 | Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium | Kannapolis, NC
Broadcast: Power Baseball Network and wvpower.com
TONIGHT'S MATCHUPS
Game One: LH Colton Cain (1-0, 0.00) vs. RH Kevin Moran (0-1, 14.21)
Game Two: RH Zack Von Rosenberg (0-0, 5.40) vs. RH Ryan Buch (1-2, 3.63)
- POWER REPLAY: Last night's game at Kannapolis was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader tonight. On Thursday, West Virginia dropped its third straight game, losing 4-1 at Kannapolis on Thursday. The Intimidators tallied three runs in the fourth inning against Power starter Tyler Waldron, and added a solo home run in the sixth before West Virginia could even crack the scoreboard. Justin Howard provided the lone offensive highlight with a ninth inning solo home run. Waldron took the loss, and Howard had two of the five Power hits.
DOUBLEHEADER DAYS: The Power have only played one doubleheader so far this season, having swept Savannah on April 10 with 9-1 game one win and taking a 2-0 victory in the "nightcap." The Intimidators are also 2-0 on their lone doubleheader date this season. Only four teams in the league have not played a doubleheader yet.
LIGHTS OUT: Colton Cain is one of three Power pitchers who has not allowed an earned run this season, and is the closet to qualifying for the League Leaders board. Cain is one inning shy of qualifying, and could also make the leader board for all of Minor League Baseball with another spotless effort. The Waxahachie, Texas native could be one of ten pitchers in the minors to have an untouched earned run average of 0.00 with a clean effort tonight.
DAY AND NIGHT: Wednesday's loss was the first during the daytime for the Power this year. West Virginia is now 3-1 during the daylight hours and 3-6 at night.
BULLISH PEN: West Virginia's bullpen as a collective whole is 2-3 with a 2.85 ERA over 53.2 innings of work this season. The relief staff has combined for 51 strikeouts compared to just six walks. Conversely, Power starting pitchers are 4-5 and have struck out 57 batters, but have a combined ERA of 6.02 after allowing 16 earned runs over the last three starts.
NOT TO BE INTIMIDATED: West Virginia and Kannapolis play the fourth and fifth games of this series tonight. The Intimidators lead the all-time series 36-29, but the Power have played well historically on the road at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, save this series. West Virginia is 14-18 all-time at Kannapolis since 2005.
PINPOINT CONTROL: West Virginia pitchers have combined to walk just 24 batters this season, by far the fewest in the league. Delmarva has played 15 more innings than the Power, and has walked a league-high of 71 batters. West Virginia has also walked the fewest in all of Minor League Baseball, two less than New britain after the Rock Cats issued six free passes on Thursday.
POWER POINTS: Power pitchers allowed as many earned runs in Tuesday's loss as they did during the entire series at Augusta. They also walked as many batters Tuesday as the did during the whole Augusta set... Dan Grovatt has walked five times during this series and 11 times on this road trip. His season total of 14 walks is second in the SAL.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh's game with Washington was postponed due to rain... Indianapolis lost 7-1 at Toledo... Altoona won 11-5 in 15 innings at Richmond after scoring six runs in the top of the 15th... Bradenton shutout Fort Myers 4-0. Kyle McPherson and Ryan Beckman combined to blank the Miracle.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
