Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Augusta, Ga. - Three Delmarva Shorebirds (8-9) pitchers combined to hold the GreenJackets (5-12) to three hits and just one run en route to a 6-1 win in the series finale at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Shorebirds have won three straight games for the first time this season.
The Shorebirds go 5-4 on their first road trip of 2011.
The Shorebirds took an early lead in the second inning. Mike Flacco drew a lead off walk. Two batters later, Michael Ohlman hit a towering triple to the left-center field warning track to score Flacco from first base.
Augusta responded with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 1-1. Rafael Rodriguez hit a two out single and advanced to third on a single by Ydwin Villegas. Then, Jonathan Schoop mishandled a chopper up the middle, allowing Rodriguez to score.
The Shorebirds regained the lead in the third. Mychal Givens walked to open the frame. Jonathan Schoop extended his hitting streak to 11 with a double over the head of left fielder Raynor Campbell. With Givens at third, Kieron Pope grounded out to plate Givens.
Both teams were held without a run between the fourth and seventh innings.
In the eighth inning, the Shorebirds broke the game wide open. After relief pitcher Jacob Dunnington struck out the first batter, he walked the next three to load the bases. Mike Flacco then blasted a triple that two-hopped the wall in left field to bring in all three runners. Flacco also scored on the same play as the catcher Dan Burkhart threw wild to third to give the Shorebirds a 6-1 lead.
Shorebirds starter Luis Noel earned the win in six stellar innings. He allowed only three hits and one run. Brandon Holloway, who last pitched on April 13, tossed two scoreless innings while Ryan Palsha pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Shorebirds return to Perdue Stadium on Monday, April 25 to open a nine-game homestand at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
