LAST NIGHT: West Virginia earned a series split with a 5-2, 12 inning win at Rome. The Power held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Braves tied the score in the bottom of the ninth against Maurice Bankston. In the 12th, Jarek Cunningham reinvigorated the offense with a two run home run, as Bankston vultured the win and Gabriel Alvarado gained his fifth save.
MASTERS OF AUGUSTA: The GreenJackets hold the edge in the all-time series between West Virginia and Augusta 17-11, and have won 12 of 16 games played at Lake Olmstead Stadium since 2005. At Appalachian Power Park, West Virginia leads the set 7-5, but Augusta isn't slated to appear in Charleston during this or the 2011 season.
FIRST OF ITS KIND: West Virginia's loss Monday was the first time this season that the opposition won a game with less than three runs scored. The Power are now 24-1 when holding their opponents to zero, one, or two runs in a game. When the opposition scores between 3-7 runs, West Virginia is 30-45, and when they score eight or more in a game, the Power are 4-23.
VASQUEZ JOINS ACTIVE ROSTER: The Pittsburgh Pirates added infielder Andy Vasquez to West Virginia's active roster on Monday. The switch-hitter batted .220 for State College during 16 games this season, with two home runs and six runs batted in. Vasquez was signed as an international free agent on September 4, 2006, but will make his South Atlantic League debut when he first appears for the Power. No counter move was needed as West Virginia had been one man shy of a full compliment since Melkin Laureano was placed on the disable list on August 4.
STREAKING: David Rubinstein is riding a nine game hitting streak into his next contest. It is the fourth streak of six games or more for the All-Star outfielder. This current run has seen Rubinstein reach with exactly one base hit in each of his last nine games, going 9-32 with one home run and five runs batted in. The Appalachian State product has played in 103 games this season, despite the fact he did not become an everyday player until mid-May.
WALK OF LIFE: Evan Chambers leads the South Atlantic League with 87 walks and ranks across all of Minor League Baseball, trailing only Conner Crumbliss of Kane County (107), Lake Elsinore's Vincent Belnome (95), West Michigan's Jamie Johnson (91), and a pack of four players with 88 walks each.
POWER POINTS: West Virginia has been outscored 88-64 in first innings this year, including 9-0 during their recent four game losing streak... Evan Chambers has not played since getting hit in the head by a pitch on last Tuesday... Power starting pitchers are now 12-3 when going seven or more innings this season... Power hitters walked 11 times last night, matching their season-high from any single game (7/08 vs. LEX)...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh rallied to beat St. Louis 4-3. Joel Hanrahan got the wine, while Evan Meek earned the save... Indianapolis lost 5-1 at Louisville... Altoona walked off with a 6-5 win over Erie... Bradenton's game Tuesday was postponed and the Mauraders with host St. Lucie for a doubleheader today... State College lost 1-0 to Mahoning Valley.
ON THE AIR: All 140 West Virginia Power games can be heard on ESPN Radio 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, across the state on the Power Radio Network, and online at milb.com. Adam Marco will call the action for each of the 70 home games this season, while the home team will provide coverage while the Power are on the road.
