Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads struck early and held on late to take game one of their series against the Northern Division-leading Lakewood BlueClaws, 5-3, before 727 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday night. The win puts the 'Dads just 2.5 games back of the BlueClaws for the top spot in the second-half standings.
The Crawdads (30-27, 70-57) raced out of the gates against BlueClaws starter RHP Trevor May (6-3, 3.05 ERA) in the bottom of the first inning. After back-to-back singles by LF Travis Adair and SS Leury Garcia put runners at first and second with no outs, DH Zach Zaneski drove in Adair on an RBI double to right field. RF Jared Prince followed with an RBI groundout to first, scoring Garcia to put the 'Dads up, 2-0.
Lakewood (33-25, 75-53) cut its deficit in half against Crawdads starter RHP Neil Ramirez (9-8, 4.42 ERA) in the top of the fourth. With LF Leandro Castro at second and one out, 3B Stephen Batts hit an RBI double to left field to bring home Castro and trim the 'Dads lead to 2-1. It was the only run surrendered by Ramirez in his six-inning outing, scattering just three hits while totaling six strikeouts.
Hickory answered right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth frame. With runners at first and second and no outs, C Yefry Castillo smacked an RBI double to left field, plating Prince from second with 3B Matt West taking third. 2B Jonathan Roof then skied a sacrifice fly to right field, enabling West to tag up and score from third, padding the Crawdads advantage, 4-1.
The BlueClaws again cut the 'Dads lead to one with two runs (one earned) in the top of the eighth against LHP Chad Bell. With runners at first and second, C Sebastian Valle lined an RBI single to right, bringing in RF Michael Dabbs from second with 1B Jonathan Singleton taking third. Castro followed with an RBI groundout to short, plating Singleton and trimming the Lakewood deficit to 4-3.
The Crawdads tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by Castillo, putting them in front by two heading into the top of the ninth. RHP Johan Yan took over for Hickory in the ninth and started the inning by surrendering a single to Batts. However, Yan dug in and induced a double play and a ground-out to second to close the 5-3 win for the Crawdads.
Ramirez registered the win for the 'Dads, while Yan recorded his first save of the season. May took the loss for Lakewood.
